I have 2 golden comets and they laid well and extra large eggs but 1 of them had the softest shells that always broke and they ate them which is not good or even just touching them to lift gently would break them. both were thin shelled and i would never buy the golden comet/red star type...
I am new to this breed and one of them started laying this past week and the eggs are very small but look nice. I have seen that they are large egg producers, so will they get bigger? I do not remember my other hens years ago if they started small and increased size. But I had to ask.
As much as using the medicated I find that it does help get them off the ground a bit. That in itself is valuable. You are going to lose some young chicks and this way it seems to be advantageous than a negative. Once I go through I bag they get Nutrena Naturewise and scratch and greens etc...
well I had 3 RIR's and lost one the last day of a month long heat spell of 110 plus. I eventually bought two young Golden Comet hens from a neighbor who raises all types of birds. the were supposedly laying but only one seemed to lay - maybe the 2nd laid the '1 Golden Egg'. then stopped. she...
if they are free ranging - good chance they are laying all over the place. a friend down the road lets his 5 free range and he found 9 eggs in a rim of an old tire and a few more all over the place - so now he has no clue how old any of the eggs are and he finds them randomly. I get 3 eggs...
I have been ddealing with 2 aggressive RIR's and my 2 new golden comets. the one is much better but the bottom of the barrel one is not laying - only 3 eegs in a month and she gets picked on so much and literally roosts most of the day on the coop door. doesn't want to go down on the ground to...
It seems that the bottom of the barrel golden comet laid an egg this AM. Finally - almost 4 weeks no eggs.
Integrating 2 new hens to 2 others has been a bit of a nightmare. if they all start laying it will be worth it. Not sure I would do it again unless i had to.
