Hi all!
It's been along time since I've posted! Life is busy!
My Buff Brahma Bantum, Button, is broody again. This time, we are going to let her sit on eggs. I am confused about a broody box. I've read to put it in the coop with the flock and allow her to dash off for dust baths, but how...
Hi all!
It's been a long time since I've posted! We are planning to move to NC to be closer to family. Has anyone moved a flock of chickens to a new state?
I am not sure what to do once we are ready. I have 1 roo and 11 hens. Moving from northeast to NC. How will the climate affect them...

I am so sorry for all of your losses--everyone...
Just this morning, I went out to the coop and found my Red Cochin dead on the floor. It appeared that she had a heart attack and just fell as shavings were under her wing. No parasites, no broken bones, no wounds, no egg binding, vent OK...
Just in case anyone else has this trouble, a vet came today and trimmed his spurs and then shaped them with a dremmel tool. He's fine. They said he was "such a gentleman!." She said that they would have grown into his legs, so far better to keep them trimmed.
She thinks that it will be quite...

I'm not sure if this will work. Here's a pic of my roo with the curling spurs. He'll be 2 years old in April.
There's no way I can trim him. I'll have to find someone. Any other ways? What if I do nothing? Will they keep growing??
Thanks for your help!

Happy New Year!
I can't find any info on this...I hope someone here will know what to do, if anything.
My standard cochin roo's spurs are curled up and headed toward his legs. Is this normal?
Thanks for your help!

I love mine, too! They really are so entertaining and they each have such distinct personalities!
We are now talking about about building another little coop as my daughter wants her "own" chickens! The coop pages are so fun to look at!
I wonder what breeds we will look into....!
I know this will sound crazy as we all know that chickens do most of their pooping at night, but...
I have 1 Cuckoo Maran hen that, for the past 8 months, has slept in the nest box.
About twice a week, there is some poo in it on the hay. I take it out, put fresh in..no worries. I have no...
I use Poulin Grain for my hens and give them BOSS. About 3 cups a day of BOSS for the 13 of them because they are molting. One, my Ameracauna, is in a rapid molt and is near featherless! She has new feathers coming in all over her entire body AT THE SAME TIME! She sometimes squats down when...
Thanks so much!
It is so stormy here today--winds up to 60mph and rain and cold. I am keeping them all in today, just to keep her in. She would otherwise run out, get soaked (it's raining sideways under the covered part of the run!) and she'll get chilled for sure. I've only ever kept them...
Hello!
My Ameracauna (1.5 years old) is moulting now. It started maybe a few weeks ago, and now she is really bare! Has quills coming in (about 1/2" long) on breast, wings, neck, back...is it possible that she is growing them all at once?? Does this mean she is a rapid moulter??
She's a...
Can you quarantine one hen alone for that long? Wouldn't she get so lonely?
We have 12 hens (2 are bantys) and 1 big roo. Lot's of space. A friend here on the island had two bantys and a dog killed the roo. She's asked if we could take the little banty hen.
For quarantine, what are we...
Just a comment of caution...
if you are laying the chicken wire on the ground on the inside of the run, the hens may hurt their feet when digging and scratching...
in our run, they have a bowling gutter all the way round the run! It's ok because we ran the chicken wire around on the inside...
Ours is chain link. It came from a tennis court so it is 10' tall. We aproned it on the outside of the run for 4 feet and covered it with dirt. Also, ran and trenched chicken wire on the inside. For the top, we unrolled wooden snow fencing. It all works great and we have serious birds of...
I had a shell-less egg a few days ago and a sandpaper egg today. Also had 2 eggs (different days) on the droppings board! I guess it was quite a week! Had no idea that anyone was having trouble laying...
I need a spy cam in the coop to see who's doing what when!
