Buff eating a lot but super thin

The feeder is available to them all day long. It's in their run with them and it's never less than a 1/4 full. They've never run out of it. Now it's a few months later and she's still so thin AND has recently gone broody. So now I have the wonderful job of removing her from the nest on a...

Has anyone ever had a chicken eat glass?

My chicken ate a piece of glass...

I don't know who lived her before us, but we have tons of little pieces of glass all over the yard. For all I know, she's chowed down on some before, but this is the first time I've ever witnessed it. It seemed to be a pretty sizable piece. It seemed to go down fine. Think she'll be okay...

Does DE do a good job of worming?

Thanks, CMV. I posted this one here first and felt it was in the wrong place so I posted in the other forum. I appreciated your knowledge about them, though. It makes me feel a lot better. I think she's fine. And, they really appreciated all the extra treats they got as a result of my...

Does DE do a good job of worming?

I only have 2 hens and she's definitely the dominant one. After speaking with a person at the feed store, I came home and put ACV in the water and added some chick starter to their layer feed. She told me it should help so I'll wait and see.

Buff eating a lot but super thin

The woman at the feed store said not to worm her unless I see worms and she said I'd definitely "see" them. Well, I haven't, so she suggested I put a Tbsp apple cider vinegar and a Tbsp sugar in their water over the next couple days and to increase their protein by mixing some chick starter...

Does DE do a good job of worming?

Yes, my buff is the only one who seems very lean. My cochin is hefty. They only get to free-range on the weekends b/c of my schedule. I've inspected the pooh as much as I can but I can't find any worms. Maybe she's healthy as can be and BOs are just really thin? But I thought I'd read that...

Does DE do a good job of worming?

I have a chicken who eats like she's famished but doesn't seem to gain any weight... in fact, she feels like she's feather and bones. She has great energy though. Due to her feathers, you'd never know she's lacking in weight. I'm not certain it's from worms or parasites but I thought it...

Buff eating a lot but super thin

Thank you both. I do have some DE and I think I might try that first. I'm heading to the feed store to pick up some more food today so I'll inquire with them as well. They have a sandy run that I rake out as much as I can but lets face it... it's basically sand with broken down poop. How do...

Buff eating a lot but super thin

My 10 month old buff Orpington looks and acts like she's in tip top shape but when I pick her up she feels like she's all feathers. Her breast bone is prominent and she hardly has any meat on her bones. My two girls live in the city and due to the season (getting dark early) and my schedule...

How did I get a speckled egg???

I have 2 girls, a buff Orp and a black Cochin. Both are now laying. My buff's eggs are a pale tan and slightly rounded. My cochin, who just started laying in the last couple weeks, lays a darker egg that's slightly pointy on one end. This morning I went out there to find an egg that looks...

    Will chickens eggs get bigger?

I have 2 girls who are about 9 1/2 months old. My buff started laying about 3 months ago and my black cochin just layed her first egg earlier this week. I'm just wondering... I know the girls are only about half the size they'll grow to be, so will the eggs get bigger as they grow? Or do they...

    Need some advice

We kept her in the house for about a week. I hand fed her and gave her vitamins but she continually got worse and and her breathing was starting to become labored and she was pecking at her own foot to the point of blood. So, we made the decision to have her put down. We did it last night...

    Need some advice

After hanging out with her tonight and seeing that she seems healthy in every other way, except getting around, we have decided to "wait and see" it's just tough to know the right thing to do.

    Need some advice

I am worried about her not being acclimated to the weather as well. We've had a few nights/mornings in the high 20s and some pretty brisk days. She was out there and managed to do alright those nights and days. Her limp is now so bad that her foot is just curled up and she rests on the hinges...

    Need some advice

She's been pretty mellow in the house all day but I took her out when the other girls were out earlier this evening and she hunkered down when they came near her. Then I saw one of them going for her feathers on her neck. So, now I'm not so sure she's molting. I think they were going after...

    Need some advice

Thank you for your reply. I thought about Marek's back when we first noticed the limp but I found that the place we got our chicks vaccinates for Marek's. Plus, she doesn't show any of the other symptoms. I'm wondering if she doesn't just have a lot working against her. She was getting...

    Need some advice

I have a 7 1/2 month old chicken who has had a bad limp in one leg the last few months. She recently started laying eggs and it appears she's also gone into a molt b/c her throat area is bare. A few nights ago I noticed that she is no longer roosting and is instead sleeping on the floor of the...
