Yeah, they have separate living quarters for now. I am just experimenting to see how they interact today for a few hours and then will separate them again. It just surprises me to see how well they are interacting to this point.
This is long, but I'm explaining my lack of experience, lol. If you don't want a lengthy read then skip to the last two sentences.
Our first flock was 9 birds, consisting of 6 different breeds. We LOVED them but when I decided to go back into engineering school and my wife was 6 months...
I live in the Phoenix area where last week we hit 119... they definitely don't have to worry about staying warm, lol. However, the size/prey makes a great point. My chicks stay in my planters hidden by my hibiscus bush whereas the hens don't try to stay covered by brush.
My first flock was 9 birds, 6 breeds. When I decided to go back to school we found out that my wife was pregnant with our second child so we decided it would be too much work for her and I would have no time to keep up our flock. Six months after my son was born my wife told me she really...
I ran across them after posting on here but they don't have the breeds available that I want and they don't have suspected dates when they will. I found a couple of people on Craigslist that I'm checking out now. I want utility and egg color, so I don't have to get a show quality bird. Thanks...
Looking for where to buy a small, specific, set of chicks. Smallest order online is IdealPoultry.com. I bought my first flock from them. That ended up being 9 pullets. I am looking to get my second flock now but I only want 3 birds, two Americauna and one Welsummer or Maran...
Any idea where I...
What are pinless peepers? I guess I can build the holland a small separate run. I'd just hate to do that for a permanent solution. How much interaction did you give the them altogether and how did you determine it was ok to put her back in with the flock?
Going through something similar. Got all my hens at the same time. They are about 13 months old at this point. I have a barred rock terrorizing a barred holland. I thought the holland was broody so I built a buster. After 4 days in it she laid so I placed her back with the flock. It has not...
Thanks for the advice. The other holland seems to be her best friend. I was thinking today that I maybe should put them together so she isn't lonely. I know they are social. I put her back with the flock just before sunset so she isn't forgotten. I know she still gets harassed some but at least...
I have a flock of nine with various breeds. One of my barred rocks is head hen. My two barred Hollands are bottom of the totem pole. They have been an INCREDIBLY peaceful flock until 3 days ago. I went out in the evening to check on them and saw one of my Hollands in the nesting box. I thought...
Phoenix posters:
I'm having terrible trouble keeping the fly population down. Last year was an issue as well so this year we put up 4 fly strips and 2 fly bag traps (stinky but very effective when you see the dead flys in the bags). I also put pine shavings around 4" thick in the run hoping the...
Haha. Nah, I enjoyed the pun of sorts. And that makes sense bc the days are shorter progressively but it amazed me how egg production fell off as if the earth was flat.
I wondered if it would be bright enough. The funny part is that it was working until 2 days ago. I'll supplement more light this evening and see if it changes anything. Thanks for the reading newspaper reference. Now I know how bright it should be
Our coop has an open back that faces our bathroom window (ice block style, 4x4) so when our bathroom light is on it shines directly into the coop. We turn the light on around sunset until at least 9 pm. Sun rises a little after 6:30 am here. This has worked until two days ago. I'm wondering...
I live in the Phoenix area. I have a flock (my first ever) of 9 hens (6 different breeds). 8 of the 9 are laying. I've been getting between 6-8 eggs a day and quite suddenly my production fell off the map. We went from 6-8 to one a day yesterday and the day before. We've had two today so far at...
Don't know what happened. By the time I got home they were completely normal. No foaming, normal behavior. We don't have scorpions in the yard thankfully!!
I have no details but just got a text from my wife saying 2 of our flock of 9 are foaming at the mouth. They have never shown signs of sickness. Production has been normal. They have clean water. What can it be? What should I do???
