Arizona Chickens

I messed up again! Tried to post to this forum with pics of my new coop and run and it ended up in the wrong spot! Rats! Anyhow, here is the link: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/941497/girlchicks-new-coop-and-run

Comments and suggestions are most welcome.

So your coop is the shed??? I think you are going to want a lot more ventilation come summer months. I know I'm working for more ventilation as I didn't put enough in the first time around. It'll have to wait on me - but I'll get it done before the heat of summer. Think about it. Otherwise I bed you are going to love it!!

We have a dozen up in the Huachuca mts.  I don't have your climate, but from other posts I've read from Mesans, making sure they have plenty of water is paramount.  Some folks put a "misting" line in their pen/run, but others have reported success without it.  Obviously, shade is a must-have in the summer months.

My rule of thumb is to treat them as well as I would my dogs. Shade, water, shelter with plenty of food available when they want it, supplemented with scratch-grains and oyster-shells.

What breeds do you have?

These are 2 of my most recent additions, hatched October 27th and I was surprised that they carry the frizzle gene. This was a hatch of English Blue Laced Gold and Black Laced Gold Orpingtons. None of the others are frizzled. The black pullet looks like she's having a bad hair day.

That is crazy, where did you get your egg's? It will be fun to see how they turn out.

We have 5 babies, the WA, isbar and I think a mix chick cream leg bar hatched today. 3 left to hatch..

Yes, I'm planning on modifications for more ventilation before summer. For now, with the window and the open chicken door and the breeze that constantly blows here, they will be ok. The run will be covered for shade and, because these are very very spoiled girls, I have a portable swamp cooler that I use for their coop when the temps get over 90, plus they have a wading pool. LOL

Eggs came from Keith's Orps in the UK and Ultimate Orpingtons in Virginia. The frizzles are from the UK batch, I think as I don't think there are too many here nor have I found anyone selling them. I was concerned with too few bloodlines here in the US which is why I got some from out of the country. I'm trying to talk a vet friend into helping start a registry by drawing blood from each of my birds so we can avoid too much interbreeding and the health issues that result with it. I also would like to know how healthy my birds are, if the are carriers of anything, though I do vaccinate for Coryza, pox, Mareks, Mg/Ms and Newcastle.

How many chickens do you plan on getting? Also, look at real photos of the breed you will be getting. They are fun to see what they will look like at different stages.. Keep us posted on what you get..

Our RSL laid some huge eggs occassionally, but mostly, she laid 20-30 gram fairy eggs. After 2 months of erratic laying, she keeled over yesterday. No clue what happened. She was fine, squatting, begging for treats, eating, drinking and an hour later, she was dead - looks like she just dropped in place . She may not have been much of a producer, but she was by far the friendliest bird we had. We aren't totally surprised by her death, though, since something was clearly wrong with her from the start.
