Arizona Chickens

I have no details but just got a text from my wife saying 2 of our flock of 9 are foaming at the mouth. They have never shown signs of sickness. Production has been normal. They have clean water. What can it be? What should I do???

Wow....strange. The first thing I would recommend is isolating the affected birds from the other healthy ones and making sure they have a fresh supply of water. I'm trying to find any info on foaming mouths in chickens, but my initial thought would be some kind of toxin.

Here are a few sites you can also research for more info on what it might be:

Isolate first. Do their crops feel normal? Do they have an off smell? Besides the foaming, how is their behavior?

:idunno   Frizzled Orpingtons?

They're quite common in the UK. The majority of the eggs in that hatch came from a UK breeder and a few from a breeder here in the US, VA. I'm thinking of getting some Chocolate Silver Birchens and Blue Salmons next year. They're gorgeous!

Are they listless/stumbling/floppy and getting progressively worse...acting 'drunk'? If so, it might be a reaction to a scorpion sting. Ours would get a lot of mucus in their mouths and gradually have worse and worse breathing problems. If it's a scorpion sting, Children's Benadryl liquid all the way! There is info about how much to dilute it by weight here on this thread (probably) and elsewhere. Key is keeping them breathing and unable to fall into a position where they can't breathe well, since they get pretty paralyzed from the sting and it typically lasts for at least a few hours.

Again, this is all if t's a scorpion...hope you can figure out what's going on!

* McMurray Hatchery has some pretty chickens. I like the Laced as well but I have a Salmon Favorelle whose super sweet and talks back to me. As for chickens, you definitely wanna learn about what they call the "Pecking Order". A list of chickens - from those that are cranky and will pick on others to the most calm you can get. Favorelles are at the bottom of that lust. Once ya get a Laced, you're kinda stuck with that breed. They don't really tolerate others. So as ya get more chickens, you'll have to keep them separated. So it's good to get 4-5 hens at once - depending on how much ya eat eggs. And ya don't need a rooster to get a hen to lay eggs. That's a myth. My uncle raised and showed at the State Fair here. As well as judged. It's always good to get opinions from everyone too. I plan on ordering from McMurray in late March. So they'd be good for some questions ya may have as well.

Look at this 4 ounce egg one of my Marans laid

It is next to a normal large (2 ounce) egg. I haven't cracked it open yet, but it is surely a double yolker.
