Muscovy's sound very nice, and I know they are a popular duck breed :) Too bad you are so far away. Are Muscovy's good at foraging and watching out for predators? (I am digging a pond in one corner where there's a natural clay deposit, so want them out by day and in their own coop at night)...
Hello,
It's been a long time since I've posted. I'm looking for some nice egg laying chickens (dual purpose okay) that have good bloodlines, along with some guinea fowl (any type). A small flock of ducks is likely in my future too.
The last time I got birds I got runty dual purpose chickens...
...drugs, but it's 'impossible' for a vet to use them normally because of the risk. I've done anesthesia or seen it done on songbirds, eagles, parrots, etc. But there is always some risk, and cost, to consider before doing it.
Cat, let us know what else the vet says and what you decide. *hugs*
Treating wildlife yourself is illegal, and that's generally a good law which protects wildlife (assuming you are in the US). It is okay of course, to take them to a wildlife rehabber, which is any wild animals best shot at a good life and a future.
You can google wildlife rehabilitation...
Yep, that really sounds like a hernia. You need a vet. It won't self correct as intestines are trapped there, and will only get worse as the guts become strangled. I would keep an eye on her and get her to a vet who can treat chickens on Monday.
It could be a partial hernia, and that is best checked by a vet. Is her vent clear? What do her droppings look like?
Hernias create adhesions and pain and GI blockages, so are not to be played around with.
I've done a goat, and only needed help to hang and later to split the spine. I've field dressed a deer alone, and once pushed a seasoned hunter aside and said No, no, the root of the mesentary is up here, and shoved my arm past the guts, much to his surprise, lol.
I've had rigor set in rather well with my larger malle guineas, and stay for days. Which was a pain because they barely fit in the bags and suddenly their legs were opening the ziplocks!
The best thing to do is take the bird out and move the meat. This can be as simple as moving all the joints...
Me again. A few months ago I was looking for a home for two silkies and two barred rocks, and my uncle and grandmother decided to take them. The barred rocks did well. The silkies never adjusted, the other chickens didn't let them out much, and they were stressing and becoming flighty. A few...
Thank you again Peace Eagle. My friend drove up yesterday and picked them up. Frightful has decided to woop everyone to show she's boss the naughty girl! Apparently she doesn't like making new friends ;) It's not that bad though and the flock will adjust.
I miss them so much already!
...waiting to hear back from someone in Delaware. This might be a good option because I might get my Frightful and Pepper (and maybe Coal and Snow) back once I find a new place which is chicken friendly (whenever that is because this move will cost me! gaah. At least 9 months. *sigh*)
So no...
Thanks PeaceEagle. Your place sounds nice and I'm glad you won't have too many Roos ;)
I will have to think how to get them to you if no one else is keen. They are nice hens. Right now I've kicked them out of the coop to help Frightful and Pepper break their brood. They are stubborn girls ;)...
