Sorry for not replying sooner....computer and internet issues for over a week now!
Things have actually calmed down from when I first posted. Our injured rooster has a new home with my inlaws, and the injured hen is all healed up and back out with the flock with no problems. My EE rooster...
We've decided to put in an exhaust fan in the coop....like the kind you find in greenhouses. We have plenty of ventilation, but this will keep the hot air constantly blowing out of the coop....
in theory...
I think I'm about to or already have have a roo problem. Short-ish story...
My established flock was made up of 12 hens, and 1 EE rooster. The EE roo is a little rough on the hens when breeding, but other than that, he's not bad to them. Sadly, with the massive heat wave in the midwest...
So sorry for your loss. I know how you feel, though. At the beginning of the heatwave, I went out to check on my flock and to give them fresh water, and I found a dead EE laying in front of the fan in the coop. The others were crowded around the ice. Two hours later, I went out again and had...
With the recent heat wave in the midwest, we've been very careful to make sure all our chickens have fresh water, shade, ice for the nesting boxes, fans, etc. My older hens seem to realize that being outside the coop in the shade is a much cooler place to be. The others...well...not so much...

I have 13 hens of varying breeds (BR, BO, SLW, and EE's) that are 21 weeks on Monday. Our BR's have started to lay tiny pullet eggs, and I we think a SLW has joined in as well. Knowing that EE's take longer to mature/lay, etc, I knew it would be several weeks before I got that treasured first...
I think ours lay all day too!
Our BR, Geraldine, was the first hen to lay, and she was producing an egg about 8am. The other BR's started laying as well, so usually by 1pm this week, there was an egg. But, I just went out about 11am, and no eggs. I'll check again about 3-ish....
Most days...
Found our first eggs this morning!
Yesterday, I didn't get out to the coop- we were gone most of the day and evening, so it was too late, etc. This morning, myself and my 2 year old daughter tromped out in the cold rain to check their feed and water, etc. My girls are at 20 weeks, and my...
