I’m interested, did the chick survive? Also if you took pictures of the leg where it was folded in, could you post those? I’ve never heard of this happening.
Thank you for the quick responses! I’m sad to learn that not much can be done to fix it, since coyotes live at this park and I’m sure she can’t fly. She has survived this long though, so she’s probably smart enough to stay near the people or on the lake.
Hi, I am not a duck keeper (I have chickens), but I saw a duck at a local park with some very strange wings. Some of her wing feathers were sticking straight out sideways, perpendicular to her body. She didn’t seem to be in pain. She flapped her wings and the feathers were clearly attached, not...
Did the booties work out well? I ask because I have a one-legged rooster whose foot gets some hard wear and tear (as you can imagine), and he recently got bumblefoot. Not good, since he doesn't have a "spare"! Did the booties seem to help your duck?
I don't have a way to ship them. I don't know which are males or females, either, so you could end up with all roosters. :( Thanks for inquiring though.
Yes, they are bantam mixes.
The ones I posted about have been sold, but there's been another batch born. They're around a week old. There are 11-12 of them and it's $2 per chick or $12 for all of them, and I'd love to have the mom go with them if you're interested.
Thanks for responding. I peeled the membrane back a little (no bleeding), used coconut oil to soften, had it under a heat lamp and it was actually working on hatching by itself when it stopped breathing. :( Not sure why, it was a perfectly formed little baby with yolk fully absorbed. Maybe it...
I checked under my broody hen this morning, she had 2 eggs left and one hatched but the other is like this:
She's crushed two other eggs by accident in this clutch (and killed the babies) so I really don't want to give this one back, but I'm kind of at a loss. I made the hole so it could...
So my last chick in a completely unexpected clutch is finally about to hatch, and this happens:
This is the third egg this hen has crushed by accident, the other two chicks were killed and I frankly do not trust her with this one. About half the shell is gone, along with part of the outer...
I haven't candled them yet. I did notice, when she got up and I looked at them, that the pipped ones moved a little and/or chirped when nudged. So as of that time, they were alive.
I went ahead and helped the stuck one out. Membrane was completely dry, egg yolk absorbed, and now that it's out...
Thanks. I followed your suggestion. It didn't kick out, but the membrane was dry even under the shell, so I continued...eventually it sort of fell out of the remaining shell. The yolk is fully absorbed, thankfully. Now it's lurching around a little like they do, and mostly dried already...
I have a broody bantam mutt sitting on 14 eggs (and 3 chicks) right now. Didn't even know she had them until I found her hidden stash of eggs today, with the hatching already in progress. I guess we'll see how many more we'll get!
Nope, not an experienced mom. Actually this is her first hatch! She does come from a long line of great broodies though. And yes, two of my other hatches I didn't know when exactly it was happening, so I didn't worry about it until after. Ignorance is bliss.
I just posted about this problem elsewhere, but then I saw this thread!
I discovered a totally unexpected hatching in the middle of happening in a tire in my backyard today. Three of seventeen eggs have hatched and several have pipped, but I'm mostly concerned about this one.
As you can see...
Hey y'all I have questions. Just discovered today I have a broody bantam mix. Unfortunately I pulled her off the nest before I realized her eggs are HATCHING. She wouldn't get back on the nest for a little while (maybe 20 minutes). Two had already hatched, one has hatched since, and several were...
