    Asthma? Bronchitis?

I guess you could call the sound crackling. I haven’t noticed any drainage or eye issues at all.

    Asthma? Bronchitis?

I've noticed for a couple months that my 3 yr old Brahma rooster has a rattling, wheezy sound coming from his chest. It's like he has to cough. He looks healthy otherwise. My broody hen laid on a large clutch of eggs that he'd fertilized this past month and only one of them hatched. Today I...

    Egg laying in winter

I had this question as well. Last year was our first year with chickens and I and our mixed flock laid all year long. This year I have young ones that weren’t quite ready to lay, but very close when winter hit and then I had some hens molting in November but now even my consistent layers, the...

    My EEs stopped laying

My Easter Eggers have also stopped laying the last couple weeks too. They are 1.5 yrs old. I was wondering why also. And I’m curious when you said “ Self isolating, lethargic, staying excessively in the box, hunched or penguin stance, tail pumping, not coming for treats, etc.. immediate...

    Bantam foster mom

My Silkie went broody and I let her sit on some fertilized eggs from my Isa Brown and my Easter Eggers. She’s the only bantam in my flock. We’ve got one chick so far. Day 22 ( I think) I’m worried because of the Silkie’s size she won’t be able to keep the big chickens out of the nesting...

The only picture I have is from 6 months ago but you can show her prospective suitors and see if any of them would swipe right. 😃

    Black Silkie near Asheville

I have a sweet black Silkie hen who just started laying within the last month. There are no other small hens in our flock, we lost our other Silkie to a predator. She’s a bit lonely and I also don’t have a Silkie rooster. She would love to hatch her little eggs and keeps attempting to get broody...

Beautiful Blue American Bresse ISO new flock

We've got a beautiful healthy 8 mo old blue American Bresse that is looking for a new flock. Fertile, lovely crow, protective but not suitable for farms with small children. Good conformation, no sprigs, straight, balanced comb, straight toes, wide body, no split wing. Would be a great addition...

Broody Astrolorpe in a mixed flock

Update: 4 surviving chicks! So cute. I rigged up a barrier that’s only 3-4 in high to keep them from falling downstairs in the coop but not high enough that the adult chickens can’t hop over. I guess we’ll see where she moves them. She is currently in the most popular nesting box so there...

    I'm a chicken Granny!!

Super helpful suggestion! I was trying to figure out how to keep my broody hen and her day old chicks from going down a steep ramp or getting outside. Brilliant! I want the other hens to have access to the nesting boxes and not trap the Mama hen either.

Broody Astrolorpe in a mixed flock

Maybe I could make a little ramp downstairs at the entrance so they could get back in if they got out. I do have 4 nesting boxes upstairs so I’ll make sure there’s plenty fresh straw and let her figure it out.

Broody Astrolorpe in a mixed flock

So even if they can get outside? She will make sure they don’t leave the coop? I have the coop connected to the run and all my adults hangout in the run and have access to the nesting boxes in the morning. Then midday I let everyone free range and keep the coop open ( downstairs entrance) so my...

Broody Astrolorpe in a mixed flock

Today was the day! I was so excited. 3 survivors so far. One didn’t make it. And one has just broken the shell and is starting to hatch. I separated the Mama hen a bit with a divider that gives the little ones the ability to walk around. I have a ramp that goes down to the entrance/...
