kristin- What chicks are you hatching out. Some have sex linked characteristic (color markings or wing feathers). Example: I have RIR Roo who when corssed with Barred Rock Hens produces a sex linked chick. Usually by 3 weeks you can easily tell them apart even without sex linked traits.- LeenaB

Marek's Disease
Has anyone had any experience with Marek's disease in birds. It looks like I lost 2 quail a few weeks ago to it (based upon necropsy findings). The remaining quail are seeing the vet tomorrow. The thing is they came from someone who was chemically deworming them and giving them medicated feed. But they were kept in rather smelly and overcrowded conditions with overmating occuring and wounds, etc. So I took them off of all of those things, gave them more space and took care of... -

I dressed one out today. I was a good 14 ounces (not including neck, gizzard and other innards). His leg & thighs alone amounted to 8 ounces. He still has 3 friends who will be done in a couple weeks. I'll get the review from the taste testers tonight as the little guy is marinating now.- LeenaB

Necropsy
Initial results/findings for the necropsy of 2 of my quail have come back. Enlarged liver and spleen, cocciadia, and enlarged testicles in the male. Both were underweight. They're running more tests to see why the organs were enlarged. Has anyone encountered this? I've had these birds... -
Help me keep my hatchlings alive (I've failed at this part in the past)
With high rates like that you may want to get a necropsy done on a few of the birds. I've only ever lost one chick- due to pasty but. So now it's something I look for in every hatch. At this point I'd question the health of the parent birds in question. Have you thoroughly disinfected...- LeenaB

I'm happy to report that no one died today. Due to the snow storm here the state was closed so I couldn't drop off birds for the necropsy. Hopefully they'll be open tomorrow. -

I'm going to try the glass cup method. I have one quail chick hatch with spraddle leg. I tried the bandaid method and it was an epic fail, mostly because I think I did it wrong and the chick ended up laying there helpless. -

They're RIRs and RIR mixed with Plymouth/Barred Rocks. Poussin technically fall into the 12-20 oz size range dressed. Quail generally 5 up to 10 oz. I just did some quail that were 7 oz. I guess I'll have to weigh them and see where they fall alive and calculate down to see what their...- LeenaB
