kristin- What chicks are you hatching out. Some have sex linked characteristic (color markings or wing feathers). Example: I have RIR Roo who when corssed with Barred Rock Hens produces a sex linked chick. Usually by 3 weeks you can easily tell them apart even without sex linked traits.

    Necropsy

Just an update: I ended up doing a total cull of the birds. And have cleaned out the area they were in thoroughly. Talk about a major process as bleach does not kill Marek's. I still have a shop vac to clean out, well disassemble and disinfect.

    Marek's Disease

Has anyone had any experience with Marek's disease in birds. It looks like I lost 2 quail a few weeks ago to it (based upon necropsy findings). The remaining quail are seeing the vet tomorrow. They've been in quarentine since I purchssed them but I did use the same shop vac on the quail as...

    Necropsy

Well the final results came in: Microscopic findings are compatible with lymphoproliferative disease caused by Marek's disease virus (MDV) and/or avian leukosis. Much more serious than coccidia and not curable. I have a call into my vet as they were going to be seen tomorrow. It looks...

    Necropsy

The thing is they came from someone who was chemically deworming them and giving them medicated feed. But they were kept in rather smelly and overcrowded conditions with overmating occuring and wounds, etc. So I took them off of all of those things, gave them more space and took care of...

    Poussin?

I dressed one out today. I was a good 14 ounces (not including neck, gizzard and other innards). His leg & thighs alone amounted to 8 ounces. He still has 3 friends who will be done in a couple weeks. I'll get the review from the taste testers tonight as the little guy is marinating now.

    Necropsy

Yes it is very strange. And the man I bought them from on craigslist hasn't returned my email from last week.

    Necropsy

Initial results/findings for the necropsy of 2 of my quail have come back. Enlarged liver and spleen, cocciadia, and enlarged testicles in the male. Both were underweight. They're running more tests to see why the organs were enlarged. Has anyone encountered this? I've had these birds...

Help me keep my hatchlings alive (I've failed at this part in the past)

With high rates like that you may want to get a necropsy done on a few of the birds. I've only ever lost one chick- due to pasty but. So now it's something I look for in every hatch. At this point I'd question the health of the parent birds in question. Have you thoroughly disinfected...

    cause of death

Thanks DC. Good news, everyone is alive this morning. And the birds are going to get dropped off for a necropsy as well.

    cause of death

I'm happy to report that no one died today. Due to the snow storm here the state was closed so I couldn't drop off birds for the necropsy. Hopefully they'll be open tomorrow.

    cause of death

The quail are inside my basement- so they've been at a warm 65 degrees here. Prior to that they were outside. I put the natural wormer I use for my chickens in their water. And when I went down I had 6 eggs from them. That's the most eggs I've ever had in a day. I was told when I bought...

    cause of death

In the last half hour I lost another quail. I thoroughly, or as thoroughly as I could cleaned out the existing quail cages. So far no one else is showing any symptoms. The latest death though- she seemed very bony to me as her breast bone was protruding. I'm suspecting worms of some sort...

    cause of death

I just did a thorough clean out of their cage yesterday. But I'll do it again today. We're in the midst of a giant snow storm here so- there's no sun to let it out in. It's just going to have to settle for being cleaned out again. I'm hoping not to find any dead birds on this trip down to...

    cause of death

I just went down to get a cooler to put the dead bird in. It looks like I have another one about to die. I took her out from the others, tried giving her some water. She looks very tired and sleepy with labored breathing. Any ideas on what to do?

    cause of death

I just called the state. They'll do a necropsy for me. Thankfully it's cold outside so I put her out there in a ziploc bag- only to accidentally knock her over when I went to sweep the porch. They charge $61 here for up to 6 birds. Since I've only had her a month I think the official...

    cause of death

This morning I found one of my quail dead. I know she was live at least 2 hours ago- as that's when my son does his morning chores. I go and recheck his chores late morning as a few usually need redoing. I found her still warm 15 minutes ago, but most definitely dead and stiff. The other...

    successful hatch

I hatched out my first successful quail hatch- from shipped eggs. Stats: 14/16 hatched 87.5% hatch rate 1 failure to progress around day 10 1 failure to make it out of the shell (upon eggtopsy if the chick had hatched it would have had to be culled as it had deformities ( external organs)...

    spraddle leg in quail chicks

I'm going to try the glass cup method. I have one quail chick hatch with spraddle leg. I tried the bandaid method and it was an epic fail, mostly because I think I did it wrong and the chick ended up laying there helpless.

    Poussin?

They're RIRs and RIR mixed with Plymouth/Barred Rocks. Poussin technically fall into the 12-20 oz size range dressed. Quail generally 5 up to 10 oz. I just did some quail that were 7 oz. I guess I'll have to weigh them and see where they fall alive and calculate down to see what their...
