They have water 24/7. They are fine awake and without food for a few hours. Thanks for the reminder why I quit coming to this board. Everybody is so quick to say "my ways right, yours is wrong" as opposed to just sharing ideas. Whatever works for you and your chickens is what I suggest doing...
Go to a hardware store and buy a timer for less than $10. They are simple to set for whenever you want the lights to kick on. Again, I suggest added light in the am, as opposed to the pm.
I've always added light in the early morning hours, that way they come inside and roost well before dark. Otherwise they are out scratching and suddenly the timer shuts off, it's dark and they haven't roosted yet. My timer kicks the lights on at 3-7:30 AM, then I open the coop for the day, and...
I have an EE that I purchased back in March who hasn't started to lay yet. It's definitely a hen (no sickles or saddle feathers, rounded neck feathers) she has a total of 14 hrs a daylight / heat light, eats layer pellets with occasional left overs, is not molting, is at bottom of pecking order...
I think Brama's look cool, but for some reason haven't had a hankering to raise them.
bromgren: Thanks for the offer of juvies and meeting in IA City (I am there at least once a month if not more!) I think the kids really want to hatch them out. Well, I'm blaming it on the kids, but really I...
Got divorced, sold the farm. Two years later I'm getting into chickens again, they are cheaper and more effective than therapy! Looking for several different breeds, but not really into barnyard mixes. Part of the fun for my nieces and nephews is identifying the chicks after they hatch, so would...
I recently moved my chickens from my ex's to my mothers back yard since I can't have them in my new apartment. I have a secure run for them, covered with a tarp for the time being, and they are free ranged for a large part of the day. Dad says I can move the run next to the shed and cut a hole...
I'd personally close it off. At sundown when they have settled for the night, I'd also move them to where I want them to start roosting. Just be sure that they can actually reach the roosts! A couple of nights of this and they should start getting it on their own.
We have decided to downsize my flock and husbands goat herd since winter is coming and things are really tight. I will be getting a "real job" and no longer selling baked goods and eggs at the local farmers market. I already have a buyer lined up who will purchase every bird I want to sell...
I bake for a living, so my girls get lots of shells fed back to them. I break them into my bowl, toss the shells into my "slop" busket, and dump them in the pen. No need for all the extra steps.
