Just gotta wait them out. Last year I had one in my apple tree stressing out the quail, ruining my egg production. He hung around for about 2 months while he cleaned up on the bunnies that hung around my porch. Finally when he ran out of food he moved on. But my poor quail were pretty ragged...
Shakshuka (sp?) I think is the Arabic/Jewish version of Eggs in Purgatory. But I like the "Catholic" version too. Tiny scotched eggs are good too ( boil, form a ball of sausage around them, bread them and deep fry). Gee, can you tell I'm hungry? Mmmm. My quail are on winter break, can't...
Oh, and they are nice to add to a Cobb salad too. Fun for a kids harboiled egg lunch. We dye them sometimes, you can remove the spots by soaking in vinegar for a few minutes (after boiling), then dyeing just like your normal Easter eggs. Love to make a dish called Eggs in Purgatory. :)...
Yep! But I have a run and Coop about 10 ft by 16 ft. They seem to get along pretty well, but we put them together in the late summer, kinda curious how it will be when hormones hit in the spring. They don't seem to bother each other but the quail prefer the Finch food that falls down rather...
Egg curry. They are bite sized and are awesome hard-boiled and then tossed in at the end of simmering a nice curry sauce for over rice or noodles.
Also good in a meatloaf. Soft boil and then roll the meatloaf mixture around them. Bake as normal. Looks really cool when you slice it open
I was tempted to use a slingshot cause I have terrible distance so I really doubt I could do him any damage. He's been getting fat on our bunnies so I think that's why he's not hungry enough to move on. Most of the things I've tried also scare the bejesus out of the quail too (piepans, CDs)...
I am in central Illinois and have a red tail hawk stalking my quail. I have a very sturdy 16x10 ft run with a sunk in apron and about 15 quail. I noticed a very drastic drop off in egg production and the birds started to look stressed and slim. Plus quail kept popping over the thigh high...
Well, I just wanted to raise the guinea long enough they could free-range for a bit before I put them in the freezer, They would all get put away at the first sign of sexual maturity . But I'm not sure that I could handle their chatter outside my window. Last time I had them with chickens and...
When they grow up, the quail will be staying in the run and the guinea would free range and have a small Coop to roost in if they don't pick a tree. But we decided against it due to lack of info out there on communicable diseases that could be passed back and forth between the two. Thank you...
Can I put a keets in with my coturnix until they get big enough to free-range? My coturnix will be mature in 3 weeks and are in a 10x16 pen that is 6 ft tall. If I remove them before they are fully mature, will they leave my Quail alone? Are there diseases I have to watch out for like chickens...
Btw, the run I have them in is 10x16, about 6 ft tall. I have 37 quail currently and will be culling and filling the freezer in about a month. I'll be cutting them down to about 14- 2 roos, 12 hens. They have clumps of tall grass, a doghouse to get out of the wind, and several "tunnels" made...
I have some full grown jumbo quail and my husband really wants just a few guinea for the freezer. Could I throw a few keets in with the quail until they get big enough to free range? Haven't bought them yet, wanted to see if there were the same biohazards as chickens mixing with quail. I had...
Read the stickies. Surf around here. I don't think that button and coturnix get along together well unless you have a very large aviary to keep just a few in. Why are you wanting to breed them? Your reasons will help in determining your set up. Are they going to be pets? Would you keep...
I always went out in the middle of the night and stuffed the chickens in the roost where I wanted them to go for the first few nights in a row and after a few days they figured out that it was a safe place and went in by themselves.
Heard good things about them when researching quail eggs, but no personal experience because hubby ordered off of eBay (kingshatchery I believe) which was a good experience too.
I'm not sure I have an answer for you, but I have a few questions that might help someone else to help you. How old is your bird? Has this slowly progressed or just appeared one day? What breed is she? Is she laying eggs or has she been?
My first thoughts are that I have heard d some Jumbo's...
I slice them in half and add them to Asian noodle dishes. Or u can make the cutest deviled eggs. Or you can poach them in tomato sauce and serve over crusty Italian bread (or pasta) as my favorite Lenten dish of "Eggs in Purgatory" Shakshouka is a very similar dish made in the Middle East. Oh...
I had to special order my feed. You may ask the feed store what is available. So few people raise them around here that no one stocks it but all of them are happy to order it with no extra cost added.
