Help settle an argument with DW please

Quote: Ed, if a farmer couldn't find someone to watch over his animals every day while on vacation, he would probably cancel the vacation altogether. That's just the nature of the business.

Snapping turtle attacked gosling (**WARNING ** GRAPHIC PICTURES)

Looked at the wound today and it was clean. The gosling was in good spirits so I let him out of the pen. Last I saw him he was bathing in the pond where he got attacked. I was going to post it in the Predators and Pests section where the responses would be typical. Instead I posted it...

Snapping turtle attacked gosling (**WARNING ** GRAPHIC PICTURES)

Quote: A little bit big for the ducks to mess up the shore line, don't you think?

Help!! Something is wrong with my baby.

Quote: It could have been something simple like a rotting snail, a dead mouse, or a couple infected maggots. What you described sounded like poisoning.

Help!! Something is wrong with my baby.

Quote: Labored breathing and has trouble moving? Died quickly? Sounds a lot like botulism. From http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/205400.htm Ingested preformed toxin, absorbed into the blood, binds to nerve terminals and blocks release of acetylcholine. The result...

Snapping turtle attacked gosling (**WARNING ** GRAPHIC PICTURES)

Quote: I think you pretty much have to catch and kill/eat/relocate them. The good news is that snapping turtles actually are good eating if prepared right.

Snapping turtle attacked gosling (**WARNING ** GRAPHIC PICTURES)

Quote: Snapping turtle are quite common here. You never really see them much, because the don't bask in the sun like painted turtles. When you practice free ranging farming methods, predators can really tear you up. I do my best to deter predators first, such as using a livestock guardian...

Snapping turtle attacked gosling (**WARNING ** GRAPHIC PICTURES)

I'm sure the gosling is in a bit of pain, as it seems to be making some grunting sounds. In a day or two the pain should subside. Meanwhile I added back the first gosling in the pen to keep him company. Even though these types of wounds look bad, they seem to quickly heal. The first...

Snapping turtle attacked gosling (**WARNING ** GRAPHIC PICTURES)

Well, this has been my second gosling that has been attacked in a week. The first one suffered similar damage. Finally caught the snapper that did it, I think. I'm sure there are more snappers to take his place. I cleaned the wound, dabbed on povidone iodine and triple antibiotic ointment...

    Frog legs, anyone?

Went out to the barn, and saw two ducks playing tug of war with a frog. Ran back to the house to get my camera. Boy these ducks love free ranging on a wooded three acre pond. Below is a picture of the winner:

My duck egg eating LGD has changed her ways

Quote: No, this year all my eggs have been used to fill standing orders at a couple natural and organic food co-ops. I only siphon off a batch of eggs here and there for replacement hens. Of course, the unwanted males ducklings that result are used for meat.

My duck egg eating LGD has changed her ways

I have a 14 month old Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dog that lives 24/7 with my free ranging ducks, geese, guineas and chickens. Her straw bale dog house is built right next to the pop door of the coop. Last spring my dog was going crazy for duck eggs. It was a race each morning to...

    LGD's strange bedfellows

The duck must really trust her. The dog house is only about 3 1/2 feet by 3 1/2 feet inside. I've been finding two eggs inside her house in the morning. I suspect there is another duck in there. Here's a closer shot.

    LGD's strange bedfellows

This was taken at 10:30 PM tonight. My dog's friend was sleeping with her inside the straw bale dog house.

    Oyster shell calcium

Quote: Any feed mill should have it. Mine wants $0.20 per pound, or $10 for a 50 pound bag.

    Oyster shell calcium

Quote: No smell. I just went outside and smelled the contents of my 50 lb bag. I believe they burn off any organic material first.

    Oyster shell calcium

I guess you are going through about 100 pounds of feed a month for your eight ducks. At 3% calcium carbonate that would mean that your ducks would consume three pounds a month or 36 pounds a year.
