2-3 year old Novogen limping; no injury apparent, thoughts?

It's her left leg she is favoring. But the limping seems better now, however, she still stays off to herself a lot, but interacts if I bring treats out. As "Novogens and layer hybrids getting spent after their laying cycles" wow, I didn't think about that. They were my first set of layers 3...

2-3 year old Novogen limping; no injury apparent, thoughts?

Correction: Sorry, I meant to say "I do know that she DIDN'T lay an egg the whole week that I had her in the dog crate."

    Limp - but why?!

Posted a similar issue on another post. I did find your post and read #4. I put my hen with a limp (no other injuries or odd body issues) in a dog crate for a week or so, and she still has a limp and sort of stays on her own a lot. She eats, but never has a full crop by evening. While in the...

2-3 year old Novogen limping; no injury apparent, thoughts?

To be honest, I have 4 Novogens and I don't watch them lay their eggs, so I can't tell who is laying and when. I do know that she did lay an egg the whole week that I had her in the dog crate. I felt the area you mentioned, and it isn't swollen or hard. I do natural reworking once a month or so...

What Dog Breed Do You Want Today!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

What are your thoughts on German Shepherds? Have you had them before? I've been dogless for a couple of years now, and I keep thinking of German Shepherds. But I've heard they are hard to train, or I guess need to be trained, so not like standard house dog training. I don't know much about them.

2-3 year old Novogen limping; no injury apparent, thoughts?

Hi all, it's been a long while since I've posted or searched BYC. Life. I still have my original hens; some 2yrs old, some 3yrs old. Usually, they are all seemingly healthy, but one Novogen passed away last month overnight in the coop. I found her lying on the bedding. I had noticed her often by...

Chickens leaving coop before sunrise? Why?

Question. I've been babysitting my cousin's 2 dogs for a week. They are early risers and want a potty break in the early morning. This morning at 5:30 am I let the dogs out to do their business, when I noticed 3 of my hens out of the coop and in their run (they were safe). Now I normally am not...

Prolapsed for a week, bleeding need to cull

Thank you for responding. Yes, we had to cull her. She wouldn't stop bleeding and the prolapse lasted over a week. I could feel her in pain every time I tried to clean and help her. Sad.

Prolapsed Vent - 2nd day, next steps?

Unfortunately, we had to cull our hen. The prolapse just wouldn't go in or stay in. She also started to bleed after the last egg she laid. She was in pain. My husband culled her. Thanks for all the information.

Prolapsed for a week, bleeding need to cull

Hi, here is a link to my previous post about my prolapsed hen. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/prolapsed-vent-2nd-day-next-steps.1638848/post-27994132 I've tried all methods to heal her, but today she started bleeding a lot after laying an egg again. I feel bad, because she seems...

Prolapsed Vent - 2nd day, next steps?

Ok. So the vent is still prolapsed and she is bleeding a bit more. I've kept her in the dark, but she still is laying an egg a day. Nothing I have done seems to be working and I think she may be picking at it, as now I see some, what looks like, veins coming out and bleeding. I think I may have...

Prolapsed Vent - 2nd day, next steps?

Poor thing. She still is prolapsed. She laid another egg today and is still eating, but when try to push it back in she wimpers. I stopped tonight and covered it with an ointment. If found a site for antibiotics for birds, what are your thoughts? I worry about infection.

Prolapsed Vent - 2nd day, next steps?

I did give her another calcium/vit d tablet (so this is the 3rd). The prolapse is still out. After cleaning out her cage and cleaning her up again, I tried pushing it back in again. She just pushes it right back out, even if I hold it for a while. Yes, she is passing small-sized droppings and...

Prolapsed Vent - 2nd day, next steps?

Thanks again. I am concerned that she may be picking at the area herself. As tonight when I did a final cleaning before covering her in the cage for the night, it looked more red and a bit more bloody. Ugh. Who knew chickens could be this gross 🤣!

Prolapsed Vent - 2nd day, next steps?

Thank you for responding. I posted pictures just now. Sorry for the UP CLOSE pictures! She was on my lap. Also, I did cut away the feathers around the vent. One picture is of the prolapse out, and one with it pushed in (after I manually pushed it in). Soon after, she just contracts and pushes...
