What I did is the chicks are in a brooder in the shed. But mama seems to go where ever the chicks go. So I would think if you move them to the ground she would follow suit. But definitely watch and make sure
I have 9 newly hatched chicks under mama hen. I moved her out of the coop 2 days before hatch. Unfortunately the cage she is in is just that, a small rabbit cage. She was not top hen, but second or close to that. So can chicks go up and down a ramp? Do I need food inside the coop or can I...
Well, right now we have 13 birds, 1 rooster. But last fall only 5 were laying and 6 were chicks. At the time she was not at the bottom of the whole flock, but I'd say of the birds that were laying she was at the bottom. I only have 2 nest boxes currently, 2 more are built but have not been...
She's a bantam I picked up from TSC that had a mixed bag of bantam chicks. She's the same size and color of the sebright hen, she just has a fluffy cheeks. Thanks!
I have standards and bantams. My sebright was the only bantam that was laying last fall. But she rarely laid in the nest box. Most eggs were in one of the coop corners. It was searching for a needle in a haystack. Which she would lay 3-4 eggs a week. Do you have different sized boxes for...
I do have windows and vents. The vents only have chicken wire, but I'm cutting hardware cloth to go over them instead. The windows have 1x2 wire from the garden over them. I do worry about the roof being a polycarbonate roof, and it ripping thru the roof.
Here's the best pic. But I know what a fisher looks like. My dad traps and I'm a biologist. It showed up 2 nights in a row on the game camera. Got at least a dozen pictures of it, along with two rolly polly raccoons, a coyote and a red fox. All during the full moon or close to it. Will...
So we had a fox and raccoon problem this summer. Put a automatic door closer/opener on the coop to keep the coons out. Now a fisher has shown up on the game camera in the woods behind our house. Will the go after chickens during the day or only night time? Ofcourse I say that knowing there...
That would be awesome! We lost our hen australorp this year to a fox (got the fox now). And loved how good of a layer she was. Keeping our fingers crossed for pullet.
Ok so I thought this was a cockerel, but now I'm not so sure. I only had one australorp chick from this bunch. It didn't feather in as soon as the other pullets, but not as slow as the other cockerel. Its comb is big but not as red as the cockerels. Also I'm not noticing any pointy saddle...
I didn't know if it would work this way, since last year I let them in too. But the grubs were everywhere. but our soil is so sandy that I got some horse manure from the neighbors this spring, so maybe they didn't have enough time to dig thru it, because I had potato bugs and June bug grubs...
