I piled it up today when I tended the coop. I don’t think it’s for warmth, as they will also dog pile when they want, and being Buckeyes they aren’t as sensitive to cool nights, more to warm ones. In fact I opened the HC tray under them again a few days ago when I saw Shehnai panting a little...
Hawk attack this morning! Cooper's hawk, and the netting foiled it. Saw it from the house only as it was rising up above the tripod from this relatively exposed area to perch in a tree. This is where I've been working to level it and make good rain drainage, the coops are going here for winter.
Well Shenai has been chasing and dominating every other young Buckeye since the day he arrived, practically. Plus in the Way of the Chicken, all niceties go out the window when there's a blueberry involved!
Last night's camera door check & head count on the Little's coop. Saw a weird bulge of feathers, or another body (lower left), as if someone was sleeping under somebody else. Couldn't account for it on my tiny phone until I zoomed in!
Crop support! They do like to "belly up" on to the ledge...
Can you check Misty? If not broody, why is she hanging in the nesting box? That could be a reason for an attack too, being “off” don’t you think?
That being said, I thought everybody here was also feeling cranky, maybe due to the barometric pressure and weather change. There was way more...
So, I have good head shots of Shehnai versus the other pullets' in two group resting-sun-bathing photos at seven weeks. No good leg shots, singly or otherwise where I'm sure who it is, and none that show comparative height or leg thickness well. The quandary of time passing: you never know what...
Pullet! But not by no wattles. Wattles aren’t the thing so much with Buckeyes, even a fully grown roo has small ones. The wattles and comb is always bigger than females though.
A very grand Sir Roo
Going by my experience with Shehnai, I'm going by leg length & thickness, & mainly comb size...
Guilt is a natural reaction to death, and I think our rational self looks for reasons to justify the emotional feeling. Be kind to yourself if you can.
At 7 1/2 years, she was one of the luckiest chickens, in my opinion. Remedies will only go so far. How did you get her originally? You had...
I was worrying about trying to weigh the new Buckeyes, it’s not easy getting the tamest hens here to stand in one place reliably. And Shehnai, he’s soooo big even now, very tall. Maybe I’m just not used to looking at a rooster! But he might push the upper limit on Buckeyes when he’s fully grown...
Could easily have both going on, and that would be a better situation than IL! Here the suspected MG brought bubbly eyes in Hazel, but not much nasal discharge. Thin nasal secretions in others, watery looking. Never a thick mucus. Describe again the mucus? Same on both ends of the chicken?
Coughing blood at all? Heavy mucus points to herpes virus Infectious Layngotracheitis according to Google AI, which jives with these articles below. I hope it's not. Vaccines are available but I'm guessing maybe for big farms only...
@featherhead007 Just a couple of pictures yet, the beginnings of a build for a polycarbonate roof, in light lumber to supplement the tubing. Bracing is not begun yet. This is the second wire run that's at a "T" to the first wire run. The tarp is beat and a pain. Already have a roof over the...
Been meaning to ask everyone - has anyone else noticed the "lip smacking" beak / tongue / mouth when getting snuggles? And before @featherhead007 jumps in, I mean the sound from a chicken!
Both Tedi and Annie do it often, right after getting situated on my lap. I had thought it was a dry mouth...
Beautiful! Long legs, flag tail, plus they have a top knot that doesn't obstruct much! They are on my list. Very, very wary though I think? I don't remember. Only available straight-run, as I recall.
