Is it normal for the molt to last for 4 months and include all of the birds at the same time? I've not had this happem before. I usually add light to keep them laying during the winter a bit, but they stopped laying this year in July.
They are nearly entirely in a run so would be no where to hide the eggs. I considered an egg eater, but that certainly doesn't explain why the ducks stopped laying also. On top of that, for about a month before they stopped laying all together I did have one hen lay off and on (I know it was...
I have a mixed flock of birds, mixed breeds and 1.5 to 3 years old. They layed until mid summer and then all stopped! I haven't had a single egg for 2 months! Here are the things I've tried...
changing feed
increasing amount of feed
cleaning out coop
giving more oyster shells
deworming...
I just posted a similar thread, then found this one. I too have BLR Wyandotte chicks coming in from McMurray this Saturday. I've never had the breed before and am excited to try them out. While I've been happy with McMurray chicks before I don't know what to expect with this breed. Hope...
Has anyone gotten Blue Laced Red Wyandotte's from McMurray Hatchery. I was looking to order just a few chick to replace the rooster I lost this year. I found this breed on McMurray's web site and have 5 chicks coming Saturday. I know they are hatchery stock but I doubt I'll get into breeding...
They are in a large run but do not free range. I haven't introduced any new birds and they've been in the same run for a year. Their food is the same, as is their bedding. (We did clean out their coop after the second duck started to show sumptoms. Changed all bedding.) We live on an acreage...
Several week back I lost a duck after she showed the following symptoms: loss of balance, droopy wings, dificulty walking.
A couple of week later one of my drakes showed the same symptoms. I brought him inside our shed for several days and he got better so I put him back outside. Several...
I had a duck several week ago that shower the following symptoms and died within three days.
- trouble walking
- wings drooped at her sides
- loss of balance/would fall over when bumped by other ducks and wouldn't be able to get up for short periods of time
Now, a couple of week later, I...
I love the look of a single comb, but am wondering if getting away from a breed with one would be best. I've been considering a Chantecler but don't have any experience with the breed. I also think they may be pretty difficult to find.
I have Sussex. They are my favorite. Good personalities, hardy, and attractive birds. I am looking at getting a Chantecler rooster as my Speckled Sussex roo just died, but don't have any experience with the breed as of yet. I'm hoping the Chantecler won't have the frostbite issues my Sussex...
I recently lost my Speckled Sussex rooster. I was very fond of him but he did get frostbite pretty badly each winter on his comb. Because of this I'm looking to find another rooster that will do well in cold weather, won't be as susceptible to frostbite, has a nice temperament, and of course...

I actually picked up a bottle of this at the feed store in town today, before reading the replies to this posting. My thought is that if this non-toxic approach works, great! If not I think ill try the permethrin. Do you need to wait before eating the eggs if you use permethrin...
I'm not 100% sure that I have mites, bit have seen small, red round "bugs" crawling in the bedding of the coop, day and night. There aren't a ton of them but enough that I'm concerned. I cleaned the entire coop a couple week ago and put DE in the new bedding but it doesn't seem to be doing any...
