    Chicken Dissection - help (please)

Hi all, I know this is probably in the wrong place, but I have no idea where would be the right place :) We've had to do a chicken dissection for uni and we're in the middle of the write-up (fun times, eh?). Not the best practical when you have lots of chickens at home but still...

Do you let your chickens out in the rain?

Mine go out in all weathers (for the most part), if its raining then they normally hide under the coop (the coop is lifted off the ground), if they get sneezey (as they do sometimes) then I make up some Tylan for them, but I live in England - if they stayed in during the rain they would be...

    Ridiculously aggressive hen. NEED HELP!!

Sounds like she is a nasty piece of work :( Is it possible to introduce a cockerel to the flock? We had a hen who wasn't the best hen in the world, but putting a cockerel in with them stopped the whole pecking order and 'top hen'. Other then that I think you may have to consider rehoming her...

    The strangest thing....

Hi all, Just another oddity to report. Yesterday we were all round the farm (as you do) and one of the chickens screamed, of course all attention went on the chicken pen! All the birds had gone to one side of the enclosure and one of our hens had died :( This is their enclosure (except...

    Help!! rabbit kindling trouble :(

When breeding rabbits you really don't need to leave the buck with the doe. It takes about 3 seconds for a rabbit to conceive, so if you leave them together for about 30 minutes or even an hour it should be more than enough time. This is much easier if the female wants to mate (I had a doe who...

    nesting boxes

Mine are home made wooden rows (of boxes) and are square maybe just over a foot wide (not sure how deep but a few birds can sleep in one box). They are bedded with sawdust (nice and thick). Ohh and there is a lip on the bottom of the boxes to prevent eggs from falling out, and keeping sawdust...

    handling roosters?

I did read somewhere about showing the rooster that you are in charge, I think it had something to do with holding its beak and slowly lowering it to the floor in-front of the other birds (I haven't tried this, I think I did a search on 'aggressive cockerels' on google) this is supposed to make...

    handling roosters?

I think it varies. One of my little bantam cockerel was very friendly,he would run up to you and wait to be picked up - then he would sit on your shoulder etc..... and then one day he became a little aggressive to my mum (but not me)... we found it funny because he was so small and fluffy and...

    Mixing bantams to standards

I think the trick is to go very slowly, perhaps place them side by side for a little while... then add one of the standards (the top bird) to the bantams and see how it goes, then add another and so on. I haven't heard of very many success stories with bantams and standards living happily...
