Urgent—treating sick hen in freezing weather

Thank you! Im not massing her crop bc it’s squishy not hard. I checked with a gloved finger in her vent to see if I could feel an egg, eggshell pieces, yolk….but she just seems like her GI tract is filled (poop on glove). Wonder if stool softener is worth a try? I also took her out of isolation...

Urgent—treating sick hen in freezing weather

Thank you all for who have given advice here! Update: I’ve been giving her calcium tablet (dissolved, mixed with oats and coconut oil). Probably half a tab not 1/4 bc the tabs crush when I try to break. No change to her belly—still very swollen and firm. She’s eating/drinking but is shaking...

Urgent—treating sick hen in freezing weather

I’m nervous about warming the area because I can’t keep her in the cage overnight…so she will be without that heat overnight. It’s brutally cold today so I don’t want to shock her system by giving supplemental heat then withdrawing it. No clue if that’s the right path to take bc, I agree, heat...

Urgent—treating sick hen in freezing weather

Thank you—all very helpful info. To answer the questions: -when I went out this morning, I could feel food in her crop, this was prior to my opening their food containers. Not squishy or abnormal feeling such as in crop issues. Just abnormal in regards to it containing food in the morning. - I...

Urgent—treating sick hen in freezing weather

Hi all! Over the years, I’ve gotten pretty good (with help from this group!!) at diagnosing and treating sick and injured birds. But I’m in a bind here— my favorite girl is having medical issues and the way that I would normally treat her is not possible due to the freezing weather. I suspect...

Python powder for mites in winter??

Thank you for your reply!! The cold is definitely my biggest concern but I’m going to need to douse them with permethrin. The mites pose a bigger threat right now than the cold…and I’ll blow dry them if need be!! 💪 🤣

Python powder for mites in winter??

Hi Mary, I agree with you. I actually returned it today bc I was concerned about this. We do have permethrin spray…will douse everything, inc the girls, this weekend. Fingers crossed for temps WELL above freezing so they can stay warm while drying!!!!

Python powder for mites in winter??

Hi all! First time having mites in our flock!! We use DE in our coop shavings and I usually put it (with wood ash) in our dust baths BUT, we are in Maine and the ground (“dust”) is basically frozen and too hard! I need to treat the whole flock and clean out the coop. I don’t know what type of...

    911 I need answers now!!!😭😭😭

I’m SO sorry. It’s so hard to lose one, I know. Best advice I have for you is to have a necropsy done—I know you said you buried your her/him but i don’t know when. If it was very recently....and I know this is traumatic...you may want to retrieve the body and refrigerate it until you can bring...

    Indoor chicken enclosure for seramas

Hi there! What did you decide to do? We have one single Malaysian Serama cockerel who will need to come in the house with us, as we live in Maine. I am looking into tall (37' or greater) bird/small animal cages that have a slide out bottom. I plan to put wood stove pellets into the bottom to...

Am I a hen or rooster Serama?!?!?

OK @eggsnatcher, I weighed him. He weighs 99.5 grams. He is now almost 4 weeks old. He measured about 4 inches tall, but I think he is closer to 5" when he stands very upright. He loves to sit high up (on anything!) so he was kind of sitting and not cooperating when I got out the tape measure :p

Am I a hen or rooster Serama?!?!?

Hi! I can probably weigh him pretty easily, I will try later today. I dont' klnow how tall but I can try that too. He is definitely a pure Serama. The person from whom we got the eggs is a huge aficionado of Seramas and he did NOT intend to give us one of his prized Serama eggs!!!

Am I a hen or rooster Serama?!?!?

...a SINGLE Serama inside your house during the cold months, please connect with me, I have quite a few questions, reservations and concerns ( I **DO NOT** want to keep a chicken in my house, no matter how small and cute it is....but my kids are very persuasive so I'm trying to be proactive here :)
