Hello again everyone, I haven't been on here in forever. Since then I have gotten pregnant and had a baby (who's about to turn 1)! Anyway, I had four of my chickens die because they jumped a six foot fence into the neighbor's yard and the neighbor has a dog.... So I ordered another batch this...

    Where is the poo?

Some people may put chicken diapers on them. You can actually find people who make and sell them. People use them a lot to allow their chickens to come into their house. I don't have any nor do I think I want to open that Pandora's box, but I think they are fairly popular.

    Question about squatting chickens

I know that pullets squat before they start to lay. Of my eight pullets, two are now squatting and though I know for a fact one is laying I don't know if the second has started yet but I was wondering if pullets/hens continue to squat throughout their lives or if it is a behavior that only...

I am going to try to make it to the fair (shouldn't be hard since I live witin walking distance ) So the chickens are leaving on Sunday? That means I guess I should try to go tomorrow. Hmmm... I wonder if my family's up for a trip to the fair. Scares me though that some of the chickens...

Okay, rabbits are SO super cute! DH won't let me get any though unless we breed them to eat and I just don't have the heart so no little bunnies for me. Nice to see the cute pic though . I feel like I am a neglectful chicken mommy now since I am back in school. My girls whine at me when I...

Mojo Chick'n : No, Mr. Speckles needed another home - and he is with his girls who he's been with for so long. I am just upset because I need a reason for Mr. Feathers to die, ya know? I mean, I suppose it's a good death for him (if ya got to go, go in your sleep and make it a sudden thing) but...

Quote: I was wondering if anyone was going to the fair. I live almost within walking distance of it (if you're up for a long walk, lol). I have certainly been there but since this is my first year with chickens I wasn't buying anything I just looked at them and went, "wow, maybe I'll get...

Mojo Chick'n : Quote: Congrats I've been getting more and more pullet eggs lately. It's always nice when they start to lay. btw - Mr. Feathers is a Manly Man While the other three cockerels hang out together, Mr. Feathers has all the girls following him. He's a very good roo - I hope...

When would a Barred rock start laying eggs

I just got my first egg from one of my 2 BRs yesterday (you can see pictures under post pics of your 1st egg here) She's almost 20 weeks old.

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

Here's our first egg (it's the small one on the left): Here it is where we found it by the fake glass eggs in the nest box: Here it is in my husband's hand: Here is Pixie, the lovely 19.5 week old Barred Rock who laid it:

    Nest boxes and laying

I am worried about the same thing. Out of my 8 girls, 2 have bright red combs and wattles. One (she's 19.5 weeks old) is squatting for me every chance she gets. I was just outside and she squatted for me. I pet her back for like 3-4 MINUTES and she still wasn't satisfied. I stopped petting...

I think my hens are hitting on me!

That's great! I had read about this before and was looking for it in my pullets. Just this past weekend one of my BRs started doing it. I've been trying to be patient about the eggs but now that she's doing that I can hardly take the wait.

Buff Orpingtons are super sweet and mine are quiet, especially compared to my Barred Rocks.

different ages of chicks, what food to use?

From what I've read elsewhere on this site you can keep giving them the grower feed but give them some free choice oyster shell. I have 5 19 week olds and 3 14 week olds and I only this week put out the oyster shell since some of their combs have turned red and one started to squat.

Baby Chick Grit vs Adult Grit

The baby chick grit that I bought at Tractor Supply had anise in it (that made it smell spicy and made the chicks LOVE it). I switched over to the bigger gray grit when they got older and they don't chomp it down like they did the red but they do eat it. I am actually rather glad they don't...

Okay, good, I was making sure I had it right just in case it comes up at the meeting. But in rereading it I realized something... technically I am allowed 5 hens and 1 rooster for every plot of land that is less than .5 acres. We actually own 2 plots as we got the side lot next to our house...

Quote: Okay, darn, am I reading this wrong? I thought this said 5 non-crowing, one crowing. But it IS a legal document so I may be misunderstanding it. "All crowing and non-crowing poultry must be kept on tracts or lots of at least .5 acres or more, unless a tract or lot is on less than .5...
