I have some shipped eggs in the incubator right now. Most are Serama and a couple are Silkie.
I am used to incubating standard chicken eggs. I do not have experience with hatching these bantam breeds, so I am hoping to find out from someone who does. The eggs are in a Nurture Right 360...

that's what im worried about. I have had horrible luck so far this year with chicks turning out to be roos. this is my 2nd batch of chicks. with the first batch of sexed pullets I bought earlier this year, 5 out of the 8 have now grown into cockerels. these chicks are from a different source so...
I got some new chicks a few days ago. all are supposed to be pullets.
I have noticed that my 2 Ancona chicks are feathering out at very different rates. they are both the same size/age but one has lots of wing feathers and some tail feathers coming in and the other still has little stubby wing...
that's what im thinking. the new feathers coming in make me think this one is a boy. I hope im wrong though. does anyone else have an opinion? im curious what others think.
my husband brought home 8 older chicks from the feed store about 2-3 weeks ago. no idea on age or breed of any of them. so far I know one of them is a roo for sure.
this other one I have been iffy about for a while. but now im really thinking its another roo. i think i see hackle and...
thanks.
and yes, i feel safe with the other hives. they are calm and gentle. i can walk right up to them to change the sugar water feeder that sits on the lids of the hives in just my normal clothes with no worries. on the day the other hive attacked the 2 remaining hives were nothing like that...
good news and bad news.
the bad news is that Dove, my little blue cochin bantam, passed away earlier today. she was getting worse and you could tell she was in a lot of pain and was miserable. I knew she wasn't going to make it so I chose to end her suffering. I couldn't let her be in pain and...
update:
we just lost the rooster a little over a half hour ago. He never was able to stand. he was very warm to the touch like he had a high fever. he started having seizures and passed shortly thereafter.
2 others are still in very critical condition. 1 is my blue/buff easter egger hen. Her...
yea, no way were we going to keep that hive around to wait it out. we have other animals (dogs, horses, goats etc) and 2 children. so i am just thankful that the bees didnt act up around any of them.
Here is a little background on the situation. We are on about 10 acres of property. My husband has taken up beekeeping and we have 3 hives. The hives are about 100 feet from the chicken coop and 200+ feet from our house. up until recently the hives were very docile and we have never had an issue...
yea, it was definitely feather picking and bullying since they are new. unfortunately, being stuck in the coop made it so there was no way for the little ones to get away.
all 8 are missing most or all of the feathers on their backs. its only 2 of them that were bleeding and missing chunks of...
i just acquired 8 EE pullets to add to my flock about a week ago. not sure on their age but they are still pretty young and small. my existing flock is a mix of about 8 full size hens, 5 bantam cochin hens, and 1 bantam cochin rooster.
everything was going fine until yesterday morning. we...
i think i may have answered my own question. i did some research and looked at the "rare" breeds list from McMurray and i think the chick might be a Silver Leghorn. s/he sure is a cutey whatever s/he is.
im pretty sure its not an EE. it has a single comb, is smaller than my EE chicks, and doesn't have the tell tale dark legs or puffy cheeks.
i almost mistook it for a speckled sussex chick at first (i got a few of those and it does look a bit similar.) but this chick is more grey in color than...
title says it all. i just got my chicks from McMurray Hatchery this morning and through process of elimination i figured out that this little guy/girl is the "free rare chick". any ideas what breed it is? i brought him/her outside and snapped some quick pics in natural lighting to try to show...
