I bought a roll of cheap plastic netting and made a pen close to the run so they could see it...let them out for a few hours each time, and when opened they run straight back in themselves.
After a few days I opened the pen and they explored the garden over the next few weeks on their own. Now...
I had the same problem with one of my girls and in the end spent £80 on soundproofing rubber for inside the coup.
I now shut them in it at night and let them out first thing....I can just about hear her now if I really listen hard, better than giving her up...worth every penny!
...experts,but I imagine it is based also on age as I have noticed that fully grown roo's kept by people in here allow theirs to eat layer.
Please take the advice of the folks in here and NOT at the place you bought the last feed from.
Seems like they can't find their a*** for looking at their...
eh...I was thinking the same. 'Layer feed' is precisely that...food for 'layers'! They should be on a starter food only at the minute and changed ONLY when they have started laying.
Don,t feel bad, you're helping her!
I have 2 in 'silkie boot camp' at the minute and my tiny little sweet Harriet has turned into a savage she devil....but it doesn't last. They very quickly return to their lovely selves again. Be tough....they can't help what is happening to them, but we...
It's a learning curve that you never reach the end of. You can't really go wrong as long as they have food, water and lots of roaming. I learn something each day about mine and I love them to bits. I would suggest you maybe get another, they prefer company...they aren't solitary animals by nature...
Yep,I feel the same...but I feel more guilty for not doing anything. I know nature would take it's course and they would eventually get up themselves but some birds can really neglect themselves more than others.....and I don't see anything wrong with a little human intervention to help them out!
I would lift her up(wear heavy gloves if you think she may peck you) and remove the egg/s. She could sit on them for months and they will never hatch.
I have 2 broodies at the minute and every opportunity I get I turf them out and shut the door. I don't leave them out long but they do need to...
Bar dogs, my opinion is that there should be food and water available at ALL times. Dogs and cats need restricted with food but as with anything else they should always have water.
My 4 silkie girls are pets first and foremost so for me the selection of 'who isn't any use now' will never take place.
Mine lay on and off when they feel like it and to be honest setting up the run/coup etc and the feed isn't cheap. If all I wanted was the eggs with no attachment to the birds...
Can I just thank you for the detailed reply, exactly what I was after...much appreciated.
The mice issue bothers me greatly, although I have 2 cats and bait they are still around more than I would like. Foxes are my biggest worry but we have as secure a garden and chicken run as we can make...
I've got plastic feeders for my girls .....to be honest I never thought about the effects but in my opinion we can sometimes be a little OTT in keeping chickens. Lets face it, they have been kept on farms for years surrounded by all manner of substances and it was never an issue before...
Quick question for all you 'old hands' ....
Got 2 silkies who are out in the garden from around 7am until 9pm...I give them mealworms and fruit/veg etc....they eat the worms but rarely eat the fruit /veg and now never touch their own organic pellets.
Is it ok for them to just be rummaging round...
I could understand that if it was winter and it was cold at nights, but it's quite warm here at the minute. The conservatory can actually be very cold at night despite being an oven during the day.
I'm going with the 'something disturbing her' option but have no idea what else I can do to deter...
I've had rabbits for years and down to my last geriatric one now. No reason to neuter as far as I can see, and the only real health prob to worry about are teeth.
They keep growing so if you don't keep an eye on them they can grow back up into the gums. Have them checked every 6 months and...
Don't think it could be a fox, our garden is very secure..unless they can jump a 6ft fence, can they? Only other thing is mice but we have bait down for those and 2 cats....don't see any evidence of those either. Anyone else had this situation?
My cat is actually scared of my rabbit...she tried to be the big 'I am' with him when we first got her...he turned round and thumped her in the belly with his feet. Never had a problem since!! They chase each other round the garden for fun. Try them together, you might be lucky.
I have 2 silkies, one laying and one just gone broody. They were bothed housed in a very spacious coup and run with access to food and water 24 hrs a day.
My older silkie a few weeks back was starting to holler at 4am every day and I had to keep getting up to let her into the garden so as not to...
I don't quite get this 'egg colour' thing....what difference does it make what colour the shell is? the egg is the same no matter what!!
People who will only buy brown eggs etc are either very picky or are secretly eating the eggshells also and that flags up the need for a visit to the mental...
