3/23/09 - got our first chicks 3 Light Brahams, 3 RIR, 3 Barred Rock
Here's my intro on BYC on 3/24/09:
My 14yo son decided last fall he wanted to give raising chickens a try. My 9yo wanted to also. We thought it would be good to have them research and start in the spring when it was warmer...

My son joined a 4-H racing pigeon club this year. He is renovating an unused shed into a loft, recently won one of the breeding pairs donated to the club by a retiring racer, and is getting young birds soon (all the kids in the club are getting donated young birds...

We're trying to figure out what is wrong but we aren't real good at chick anatomy yet. We've been searching on the web for possibilities and reading. Thanks for the links. We had found the one but not the others.

Hey guys we would like opinions on something from you all.
It is evident now that one of our 2.5 week old Millie Fleur bantam chicks has something wrong with it's feet/legs (call it Chick A). The other 2 hatch mates are bounding around of course quite content. In the same chick box are our...
Unfortunately, my boys have a 4-H District Archery Tournament that day so my oldest son won't be putting any of his birds in the show (yes they officially are his birds). We are bummed as he was looking forward to trying the open class and doing the Fit-n-Show. Their dad will probably take...

Sorry you couldn't come
I would love the recipe booklet. My son enjoyed several things and I would love to see if I can modify the recipes to accomodate my allergies. I have an idea, rather than printing the booklet out perhaps you could upload it to a website or email it out (save...

We just heard a speaker from the Seattle Urban Farm Coop and she said they do a bulk chicken feed order several times a year. I don't know which brand feed they order or anything else about it (we're not members). It might keep you out of the feed stores so you don't get tempted ;-)...

Last year when we went, there were signs on some of the cages saying the birds were for sale.
We don't know if we can go yet. My boys might have a 4-H Archery Tournament that day; we'll find out tonight. We hope it works out to be able to attend the show. My son's silkie that he did...

Oh are the pictures posted? We probably aren't in them since we got there late but would love to see them.
On another note...
Today we put "meany" in with the other chicks again and it seems to be doing ok. A few of the others put it in its place and it was cowering and we didn't see...
It was so nice chatting with everyone that made it to the party today. It is nice to put faces to the names we read about here. Sorry we couldn't have gotten there a bit earlier to have chatted more.
We would definitely like to get over to see Eagles aviary. Younger DS is somewhat...

Oh good I will let him know. We won't be there until about 2pm since he is helping at the Curling club before that but we will come straight from there.

I want to come and Kirkland isn't very far.
I have not been able to keep with the Washington thread (I do better with stuff that comes to my inbox than online forums unfortunately) so I hope it is OK that I didn't keep in touch earlier this year and can still come.
Was it ever decided about...

If you want to go I will send good luck wishes to you.
We love it here and after living in 6 other states we have lived here the longest not counting our home state (MI too!). I couldn't get out of VA and TX fast enough :-O the others were a bit harder to leave.

We had some clams. Can we crush the shells and give them to the chickens? The books says to feed oyster shells; are clam shells similar enough to oyster shells?

A friend just told me that her friend had to get rid of some chickens in Sno Co not because of the county rules but because she lived in a neighborhood that had covenants on the properties and they had limits on poultry. If you live in a neighborhood you might want to check to see if...

I read that frizzle was recessive so you could have chickens that don't look frizzle that produce frizzle chicks. Sorry I don't remember where I read that though.

Hey Laura78,
Since you live in my area, I am wondering if you know if we need a permit for a chicken coop. I have gotten mixed messages from the county. One said it didn't fall in to the no permit required accessory building since it housed animals so she said we needed a permit and...
Thank you all for your replies. They have given me some good ammo to use the shed.
I appreciate the links to the matting too although I think linoleum might be cheaper. We'll check.
Thank you!
