    Severly crooked beak...trim or cull?

Thanks - I have grown rather fond of her. I always have rooted for the underdog/chicken.

    Severly crooked beak...trim or cull?

Thanks Ten Chicks! That was very helpful and I will give the feeding tricks a go. I have also noticed that she seems to be having trouble grooming herself and is very "flakey". Is that common? I am about to go put a pan of DE out there with her and her run mates.

    Severly crooked beak...trim or cull?

I was able to catch her and fed her a bit of yogurt. I also took another pic. Poor thing.

    Severly crooked beak...trim or cull?

I have a chick (about 6wks) that has a severely crooked beak. I have had dozens of chickens and never had this problem. I have haven't seen her eat, but I have not been able to spend much time watching. I have attached a photo or two. Should she be culled or should I try to trim her beak...

    Help!!!!!!! Abandoned Egg!

I thought I would post an update. The chick seemed to be walking around better yesterday, still wobbly, but better. I waited until late last night and tucked her under the hen without a problem. When I went out this morning I didn't see it so I nudged the hen a bit and out it popped. I just...

    Help!!!!!!! Abandoned Egg!

It has been 24 hours and the chick still isn't walking normally. Legs/toes look fine but it doesn't seem to rise all the way on it's feet. I read something about yolk tummy and I did notice it's "bum" seemed swollen but is getting smaller. Is that the yolk and could that be why it doesn't...

    Help!!!!!!! Abandoned Egg!

Should I wait to put the chick in with the hen and other chick until it can walk? The other chick is a terror - constantly pecking at the hen's eyes etc.

    Help!!!!!!! Abandoned Egg!

He is fantastic! I like cats but they make my ears, eyes and throat WAY itchy. Does a hairless cat shed dander?

    Help!!!!!!! Abandoned Egg!

A couple more questions: The chick has dried but has some suck feathers on it's back. The skin under looks very red. Is all that okay? More importantly it hatched about 6 hours ago and is not really up on it's feet. Instead it just lurches forward. Toes are flat and I have lifted it a...

    Help!!!!!!! Abandoned Egg!

This was definitely a group BYC effort because I was doing EVERYTHING WRONG! If you can imagine when we first found it my son and I rushed inside and we took turns keeping it warm in our hands while we posted here. Thank goodness for BYC!!! Thank you everyone. I will post a new pic once it...

    Help!!!!!!! Abandoned Egg!

I plan to do just that. The hen is very protective so I hope I can get this one under her without waking her. She actually has a funny story herself. The is a Jersey Giant we call "wonky chicken" because she was attacked by a hawk as a young hen and we nearly lost her. I babied her for...

    Help!!!!!!! Abandoned Egg!

Me either! Just before you mentioned not to disturb the egg much my son and I were rolling it around trying to candle it and tapping on the shell to see if it would peep. What NOT to do!

    Help!!!!!!! Abandoned Egg!

Got the egg out and slid the pad to half and half. Once it dries I will likely need to move to a bit larger container and pull out my big heat lamp. I hope to sneak it under the hen tonight - she is very protective - and let her take it from there. I have no idea how the humidity thing...

    Help!!!!!!! Abandoned Egg!

Okay so I removed the damp paper towels. Now what?! Should I remove the eggshell or does it need that for some reason. The box is still on the heating pad. Do I need to add a light? If so I would have to move the box b/c the light won't work where it is now. When should I offer food and...

    Help!!!!!!! Abandoned Egg!

11 hours in and here is the progress. Lots of peeping and it seems to be working on it. There appears to be some blood. Is that normal? I must say I am fascinated! It looks like it is pecking a complete circle around the bottom of the egg. I am forcing my self not to help. Should I boil...

    Help!!!!!!! Abandoned Egg!

Gottcha! The dampness is not touching the egg. It is an old heating pad so no automatic shut off. It is sitting on my bedside stand so I should be able to keep an eye on it tonight. So much for sleeping! I will post any updates.
