It's time for me to switch to Layena since my girls will be 18 weeks old on Monday. So I'll be heading to the store to buy new feed on Friday.
I will have about 3/4 of a 5 gallon bucket of start & grow left over though. Can I just keep this for my next batch of chicks (probably order a batch of...
It looks to me like it's made out of a kitchen base cabinet. The standard depth would be 24" and it looks like it's a 48" base so it's probably 8 square feet. It also looks like they have a fairly large fenced run, although it's not covered. I does look like they have ventilated the roof, too...
I have 7 girls (14 weeks old today!)
1 Black Australorp - Sidney
2 Buff Orpington - Buffy and Gabriella (aka Gabby)
4 GL Wyandottes - Miss Merry, Miss Mercy, Miss Lucy and Punky
We are building a house so I've gotten Great Stuff on my hands numerous times.
The first time I got the stuff on me, I used Goof-Off.........it works but I wouldn't recommend it. That stuff is not good for you!
I finally found that using hand buffing cream (Mary Kay but I'm sure that there...
Thanks for the info everyone. Since I'd like to try to keep Punky, I think I'll try a time-out for a couple of days. Should I keep her where she can't see the others and they can't see her or can I just keep her in view of the others but physically separate?
Mine blew shut the other night -
I went to the coop to make sure everyone was in bed and they were all roosting on the ramp. They normally put themselves to bed, I figured they were just being typical teenagers wanting to stay out all night so I picked up the closest one to put her in the coop...
I have one chicken who has had behavior problems from the very start. 10 minutes out of the shipping box and she grabbed another chick by the wing and drug her across the brooder - that is how she got the name Punky.
Punky loves to pull feathers out and has now pecked all of the tail feathers...
when I hung mine Gabby (my very friendly and extremely adventurous chicken) watched the entire time. As soon as I filled the bucket I tapped the nipple really fast a few times- made sure to make it a noisy tap - Gabby flew down to check out the new noisemaker, looked at the nipple and pecked at...
on the weekends I fix oatmeal and cornmeal mush and scrambled egg for them. I figure that we eat a hearty breakfast on the weekends and so do our dogs so why not the chickens? they don't get much, just a 1/2 cup of hot cereal with one scrambled egg between the 7 of them but they sure do like it!
I googled our average daylight hours here where I live and it looks like we get about 9 hours in the winter - so maybe I'll get eggs in December? That would be such a nice Christmas present!!
For what it's worth - even if you can legally have chickens where you live - your neighbor can file a civil suit if they so choose. I friend of mine had this happen with her dog. It was perfectly legal for her to own a dog & the dog was an indoor pet and was only let out in their yard...
My 7 chickens were born on 7/18 - since they will be reaching maturity during the winter will they wait until springtime to start laying or will they start to lay this winter? We don't have lights on in the coop to extend the daylight hours.
Thanks!
Okay, so I'm new to chickens and I may have gotten the wrong idea about scratch
I thought scratch was grain that you scattered so they could scratch at the litter to keep it stirred up? Should it only be used for a once-in-a-while rare treat-time?
My seven chickens are still young (12...
Thanks for the info!
lollipop - my roost is 24" high do you think I should lower it any? I can't raise it because my coop is not very tall (only 4 feet from floor to ceiling). I'd really like for them to sleep on the roost because I have a pooh tray under it - it would make cleaning up the pooh...
I had read that if you put nest boxes in the coop too early the chickens could get in the habit of sleeping in them and that could cause problems later on when they start laying. So I have not put nest boxes in my coop since my chickens are still young (7/18/11 birthdate). My question is, when...
My chickens have been in their coop for a little over three weeks now and I'm not really happy with the pine shavings in the coop - starting to get kind of smelly and cleaning up all of the pooh is next to impossible with pine shavings. I have a wooden pooh tray under the roosts with a layer of...
