I have a hard time seeing animals caged. My girls have been free ranging and coming into a 4x6 chicken run with dog house attached behind it for night.
We are almost done with their new home. 4x4 chicken coop about 4ft high with a little more height at an angle for the roof. It's 2 feet off ground so they have room under neath. It's attached to a run (we can walk in) 4x8 ft with 8ft high on one side and 7 ft high on other side.
Just need to figure out door, inside perch and ventilation for coop.
I have 6 girls. Do you think this is roomy enough? My husband just threw it together with scrap materials and chicken wire. We did corrugated roof.
They are still adjusting. At night I find them sitting on top of their old run(makes it easier to put them in their new home for bed. Monday I found 3 eggs though in their nesting cupboard (old kitchen cupboard with room for at least 2. Before I was only getting 1-2 eggs a day.
I need suggestions for ventilation. How much, how do you add ventilation? I think we may also take some of the wall boards off near the roof and replace with plexi glass for windows/natural light. Also want to add insulation to 2.5 of the walls and a light panel over it for added warmth. What is the best way to go about insulation? right now with the way it is built with 2x4's there is enough room for insulation and than a thin paneling to keep them from eating it or would hay/straw work just as well?
This is our first experience ever with chickens. Never had any growing up either.
Thanks
