Thanks for your response. I went to the coop this morning with my apple cider vinegar, my eye dropper, electrolytes water, a can of salmon and my camera. Actually I was expecting to see a dead chicken. Instead I found nothing!! All the chickens were out in the run and I cannot tell which...
I found 2 hens that didn't make it into the coop before the auto-door closed. They were huddled together by the door - one on top of the other. I opened the door and shooed the one in. Then I looked at the second one and it looks like her head is on backwards. I picked her up and I can turn...
Gracie is a Buff Orp. When she was sitting on eggs I picked her up off the nest twice a day and shooed her outside to eat and drink. If I didn't do that she never left the nest. The day before the chicks hatched, I moved her eggs to an extra large dog crate in the coop. When she came in from...
Should I clean the chick or just leave the dried blood there? I don't want the other birds to start pecking at her. If so, what would I use to clean her with?
1) What type of bird , age and weight. Newly hatched Buff Orp
2) What is the behavior, exactly. Found her under mama -...
2 more hatched during the night so I'm up to 3! 2 eggs left to go. Gracie had a black chick under her (Barred Plymouth Rock) along with her Delaware. Cinnamon had a Buff Orp under her that looked like it's belly was pecked at. I gave her to Gracie but she is too weak to withstand the...
Thanks Val!
This is really an exciting time. I don't have a spare dresser drawer but I do have a spare extra large dog crate. I set that up in the coop - put in alot of pine shavings and moved Gracie and her 2 eggs to the crate. Gracie is the one that nests in the corner on the floor with...
I bought my door from chickencoopdoor.com and am very happy with it. My coop door opens to a fenced in run. I too have a late straggler. The time is easy to adjust. I set it for 1/2 hour later than when the last one goes in at night. When I leave for the weekend I just put out lots of food...
I don't think they know if the egg is theirs or not. The eggs I have my chickens sitting on are from various hens. I think that as long as they are there when they are hatching, they consider them theirs.
Yes, thanks for the response. I have one more question - ok - so the hen is sitting on the eggs. When the chicks start pecking out what does she do? Does she move so she doesn't suffocate the chick? Yes I am really green at this.
