    Chickens Disappearing

I have lost 20 chickens in the last couple of months. There had been no signs until today. I found a dead chicken in the paddock and his only injury was the skin was broken about middle way in his back. No large number of feathers were missing. There was not much sign of a struggle, not like I...

    Automatic door on run

I am thinking about moving my automatic door from the coop to the run. This would give me the same protection but allow me to control when the chickens leave the run as opposed to leaving the coop. I currently have a hen with chicks and they stay in a covered place in the run rather than the...

    I guess I made a mistake

I had a chicken setting on a clutch of eggs in the coop and according to general consensus I built a separate pen and moved her. Everything went great and the chicks are now 3 weeks old. My guinea was setting on a clutch of eggs inside the chicken coop so I let the chicken and chicks out of the...

    benefits of guineas?

When I first got Guineas my main purpose was tick control. But, you have to free range them to really get any benefit. Free ranging usually means losing many to predators. I free range my chickens in a controlled and strongly fenced area. The guineas are housed in the same area which means they...

    My hen went broody today.

I know the answers are somewhere on this site, but I couldn't find them. 1) I am think about just letting nature take its course and do nothing. 2) Her next box is elevated so if I leave her there will the chicks be able to get out and in the nesting boxes. There is a gang-plank from the...

    It.....BEGINS! [updated on page 4!]

I hope you are locating that shed in the shade. It will be like an oven in the Alabama summer sun. Not meaning to discourage you, just be sure to cut lots of ventilation holes near the top. Great buy.

    how to make egg cartons?

I saw one person cut a 2 liter bottle in half, fill the bottom with eggs then slide the top down until the eggs were held tight and then taped the two pieces together. Different, but it might work.

Time for a gun...help me choose the right one?

You can buy a .410 shotgun at Walmart for under $100. It will kill anything up to a dog size. You possibly can buy slugs which would give you a little more distance, but reduce accuracy. The problem with a .22 is that the target has to be sitting still for most of us to hit it.

    Apples? Anyone

I have just started a small orchard of 23 apple, 10 peach and 10 plum. Each of the 43 a different variety. I got most of them from http://www.treesofantiquity.com/ and http://www.vintagevirginiaapples.com/. There is apple math also. I also have sweet cherry, tart cherry, mulberry, fig...

Dog problems and animal control is not helping.

Electric on the outside of your run and coop is the cheapest option. You can usually find used stuff on craigslist. One wire about 12 inches off the ground should do it. If it were me I would try to trap them and I would take them off to the pound. If the owners were to retrieve them then I...

Dogs eating chicken "packages." Don't want to know the answer to this but I need to know.

Most animals consume fecal matter in one form or another. As in drinking from ponds where cows take a dump. Most farmers run hogs behind their cattle to clean up undigested grain. Most people forget that animals are not humans. We won't feed our dogs some old piece of meat out of the...

WINDOWS FOR YOUR COOP OR SHED

Go to your local window replacement company. They will have stacks of windows for free. They usually just set them out next to the dumpsters. Free for the taking. I just made a whole in the wall the size of the window and hinged it at the top to open.
