A young rooster was dumped in our subdivision in NW Guilford County. He appears to be a barred rock mix and is not socialized to people. He’s certainly not aggressive though.
If there are any BYCers in this area interested in a free rooster please message me. Otherwise we’ll continue to try...
A family friend is looking to rehome their 3 chickens (free):
1-“Pepper”, 5 yrs old hen still laying green eggs, black & white speckled (not sure of breed)
1-“Red”, RI Red, 10 yrs old hen, not laying
1-“Thor”, RI Red Rooster , 5 yrs old, definitely a jerk according to the family
They are in...
Just found a small pile of these under the roost. They were not in poop. There were 4, all about 4 inches long. I’m thinking roundworms but they also look like earthworms so want to verify. Thanks.
I have been using a Hügelkultur bed for perennials without realizing it until I read this thread. I wanted a more manageable perennial bed than my in-ground one (which is a mess), so I got one of the Tractor Supply 6-foot stock tanks, filled it half way with rotting logs from our wood pile...
So here is her morning droppings. I didn’t see any blood. After I took the photo, I smashed the droppings around looking for small moving things, and didn’t find anything.
I’m keeping my eye on all the droppings I scoop and will be ready if something pops up again. Thanks @Eggcessive for your...
It’s hard to tell because I use sand in the coop, but no, I didn’t see anything moving while I was looking at it, or when I transferred it to the container I took to the vet.
I’ll see what tomorrow’s droppings look like (I checked her location after they went to roost).
I found this this morning and took it to the vet for fecal, then bought Corid. Looks like more than intestinal shedding to me. Fecal was negative. I told them I was looking for cocci or possibly something else. In 4 years of owning chickens I’ve never had coccidiosis, but there’s been a...
We live out between farms and have multiple hawk families that live around us, so we use a covered run and hawk-proof netting over fenced foraging areas.
One day I walked out toward the covered run and saw one of my chickens standing stock still in the run. Usually when I approach they get...
Hi Erica,

Welcome to BYC from a fellow NC Piedmont chickeneer! This is a great place to find ideas and help for everything chickens.
I also may be building another coop soon and am enjoying all the coop ideas in the Article section. Check them out!
I’ve had 3 blueberry bushes for about 10 years and didn’t realize they can be so picky about soil! They provide more berries than we can eat in a season so I freeze most of them and use them for blueberry buckle and muffins. My neighbor just planted some blackberries close to the property...
Based on this article posted earlier by @Molpet as well as the wealth of info in this thread, I’m thinking it may be part of raising poultry now. I would assume we’ll be closer to an answer when the actual fall southerly migration occurs. Like @raingarden said, a lot depends on where you are...
Auctions and swaps aren’t my thing, so no worries there for me. But yes, the fall migration is very much on my mind. Like others have said, just keeping on with what I can control (biosecurity), watching the sites, and taking care of my ladies. Plan for the worst and hope for the best, for my...
Down in the Savannah area. Wonder if we’ll be seeing some wild/water birds show up too.
Nothing against swaps, auctions etc., but I would’ve thought they’d wait till the general “all clear” before reopening swaps. $$ I guess.
