Why chickens? I really wanted an alpaca (I thought). I must admit, this crazy idea of raising chickens was my
husband's. I think he was concerned he would come home from work to find alpacas grazing on the lawn.
I thought about chickens and we decided it could be a great idea, but I really...
I'm so sorry to hear about your chicken. We also had a chicken die like that. She had been making a weird barking noise, but not making many other chicken noises. She was the only hen not laying eggs. I isolated her. Her weight seemed to drop overnight and the next evening she took a last...
Our Australorp began laying a larger egg - about 2.15 to 2.25 oz. The size and weight increased a bit (2.4 oz) after about 2 months. One of our larger EE also began laying a larger egg, although smaller than the Australorp (1.85 to 1.95 oz) and her eggs have been pretty consistent at that...
Interesting that she used to sleep inside the nesting box.
It has been my understanding that chickens prefer to roost at night. Some prefer to be as high up as possible. Nesting boxes are usually for egg laying, although our younger pullets who are not laying yet like to perch in the...
Chickens are just the most useful animals. I never appreciated them until my husband suggested getting chickens and the idea began to grow on us. Chickens eat bugs, they produce fertilizer which can be used in the garden (after composting) and they provide a wonderful source of food with many...
Nice photos! I love it when I open the big door in the morning to clean and the pullets come flying right off the high roosting bar, out the door, over my head. I have never been able to get pictures - laughing too hard.
I think Oliver is very photogenic.
I would second the suggestion about hardwire cloth.
Raccoons and opossums live in the city. I think I read somewhere raccoons were the #1 predator of chickens.
I am posting this because I know a family with chickens who has been battling raccoons getting into the coop and they were becoming...
Thanks for your responses. The drawings were helpful too. I had looked at some pages that illustrated comb types and my chicken's looked more like a pea comb to me, but kind of weird. Perhaps it is her age - she is still young. I guess she is an EE. She started laying green colored eggs...
Are they moulting? We supplement with just a few hours of artificial light (a light on a timer in the coop). Our Austrolorp and EE have been laying regularly.
Congratulations!!!! How exciting! Our big Thanksgiving treat today was a HUGE brown egg with a double yolk from our Austrolorp. It was so big the egg container top would not close.
Eggs are fun!
We are still relatively new to chickens, but in the course of our research we visited many friends and farms with chickens. We also attended some chicken swaps. I remember one of the "more seasoned" chicken people teaching my children how to handle chickens and telling them that chickens "are...
We are new to chickens and are having great fun with our flock of 12 birds. All of the birds were purchased this past summer, as chicks less than 4 months old. 6 of our 12 came from swaps. Our experiences were mostly good and we got some good information. Our "Java" turned out to be an EE...
