A year ago we got some hatching eggs that were supposed to be silkies and polish from a local person. I don't think she kept them very well separated because they mostly look like silkie/polish crosses. The funny thing is that out of the subsequent three generations, the boys are the only ones...
Just an update. We had to put our baby turkey down a couple of weeks ago. It was walking around fine but when we moved it to a bigger pen, it started limping again and finally stopped walking altogether. I think it was that his leg couldn't support his increased weight as he grew.

Thanks, I posted my girl's picture in the ID forum and everyone said she looked like an Americana. Only she doesn't lay colored eggs! Just a light beige. She is super soft and sweet as well.
Last spring I bought some hatching eggs off craigslist- supposedly they would be silkies, polish, and laced wyandottes. Well, out of all the ones that hatched, they were polish and polish/silkie crosses. I have two mysteries however. One turned out to be a large buff colored hen, very similar...
I wish I was a better photographer so that you could see more clearly that my silkie hen is sitting on a dozen turkey eggs with my turkey who had her wing wrapped over her.
I bet if you are helping her with processing her birds along with your own, it's not an imposition. It's so much faster and easier with a couple of hands rather than just yourself.
As for equipment, our county rents out the complete set of featherman processing equipment for $20 a day. I...
Name: Last month's chicken soup
Age: at time of photo about 6 weeks old
Animal: Chicken- mutt of unknown parentage
Gender: Rooster
User: Mamalaoshi
Other: My fault for leaving the door open on a beautiful spring day. We ate him and his brothers because they were too curious and eventually...
Ha, that's so true that they are too curious. I have a couple of day old turkey chick pictures where they are just staring me down. They are so cute, cuter than my chickens I think.
I don't have any ideas how to help your tom but I had a random question- what kind of chicken is your gray striped chicken standing next to him? We have a chicken that looks like that that we hatched from a batch of eggs we bought from someone that were supposed to be silkies, polish, and RIRs...
I posted this in the classifieds but am not hearing from anyone so I hope it's alright to post here. I didn't even realize there was a classifieds part of BYC until I went looking on where to post this. It'll be gone in a second if I post on Craigslist but I wanted to see if anyone on BYC in...
He's fluffing up nicely except for the top of his head and along the spine. I was wondering, do his legs look a little wide set to anyone else? I'm wondering if he has a slight case of spraddle leg? Or maybe he just needs to get a little stronger on his legs.
Isn't he cute? He's got one foot...
Oh and if it isn't worms, another idea is a yeast infection. That something I just learned about. They can get them if the feed is wet or moldy or too many treats. What is her poop like?
I'm glad she's acting fine. It should be easier to heal her. I'm not sure what it is but I have some ideas that seem to help my birds when something is not quite right:
Remove everything from your coop and disinfect or dust with food-grade diatomaceous earth (there's opposing opinions about...
Are they maybe missing something in their diet? Or maybe it's just a genetic thing since the two are both having the same issue and you got them at the same place.
My chickens eggs always look normal after the first few eggs so I don't thinks it's normal but I don't have any BRs.
I agree with starting out with a few different kinds of birds. Also look to buy locally and you will get birds that are adapted to your climate. I've gotten all my chickens from craigslist and friends. We started both our flocks (we had a flock in NC and now have a flock in WA) with older...
I gave it another bath today because it seemed very hard and crunchy around the vent hole and it looked partially blocked. I couldn't get the gunk off but the vent hole looks clear now. I'll just have to keep checking to make sure that poop isn't sticking to the gunk. Poor chicky was very...
