Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply. My husband took both hens to the vet today, she was shocked at the size of the bloody “poop”. Upon closer examination, our barred rock, Keiko, was found to have bloody clotted fluid in her abdomen indicative of cancer. The “poop” was likely necrotic...
She’s an avian vet and loves chickens. She’s very good with them and talks to them when she’s examining them. She’s not so much a people person, though, so sometimes we miss out on what’s going on. Other than that, we’re very fortunate to have someone locally that will treat chickens!
I’ve ordered the treatment recommended but we will also be seeing the vet this week as well. Whichever happens or arrives first is what we’ll jump on right away.
The buff orpington was diagnosed with salpingitis six weeks ago, which had also affected her GI tract so her crop was not emptying...
Yeah the BSFL is not daily, only occasionally- maybe once a week. But I didn’t realize it could possibly have caused the salpingitis we dealt with. Thank you.
They get Bar ALE layer crumble from our local feed store and occasional black soldier fly larvae, plus they free range in the backyard. We give them apples and greens sometimes.
Thank you for the recommendation. She’s going to the vet next week but I’ll get some of this shipped in the meantime in case that’s what she recommends.
I’ve been really worried about her, I thought initially she had recovered but I think the original round of Corid was just like a little bit...
See photos. Found this in the coop bedding under the roosting bar last night. Cut it open and it’s soft but solid all the way through. Dark brownish red. About 2.5-3 inches. What the heck is this nasty thing!?
Everyone’s butts looked fine. Everyone is eating and drinking normally. It was under...
Did you ever get any answers on this? I have the same thing going on with my girls. I feel like it started when they started laying. I have no roosters and no signs of mites. Just really messy feathers on their backs near the tail feathers.
So we had her inside with us for about an hour but she was not happy about it and riled herself up. We put her back in the coop, and bam! Egg! We'll be keeping an eye on her still... and will still be looking for a vet that treats chickens!
My 25 week old Australorp just started laying on August 20. She laid an egg every day for 21 days straight. She now hasn't laid an egg since Thursday, so if she doesn't lay today it will be her 4th day without an egg.
She's eating, drinking, and pooping. She does go into the nest box once in a...
At 20 weeks/5 months, our first egg came from our Barred Rock, Keiko. As of today, the girls are 21 weeks, and we have 6 eggs from two of the girls (3 from Keiko and 3 from Patty, one of our Buff Orpingtons). We also had 2 oopsie eggs that were dropped from the roosts overnight, but we have not...
I've posted about the feral chickens that frequent my parents' yard up in Yuba City before. Well, my mom saved one of the new chicks after finding it bloody pecked almost to death.
She cleaned its wounds and separated it from the others (it looks like the mom rejected it) and it is eating and...
Selma vs. Patty, Buff Orpingtons
Bijou vs. Puffy, Black Australorps
Veruca, Welsummer & Keiko, Barred Rock
Isn't the difference crazy? Plus, Puffy is the only one with the little earlobe thingies. Selma and Bijou had the biggest and earliest combs until 3 weeks ago or so.
Good morning!
What age did your girls first lay? Any insight on your Australorps, Welsummers, Barred Rocks, and Buff Orpingtons in particular would be great, but all answers are welcome!
