BUSTED! Just found 2 egg stashes-at neighbors!

They're probably okay if you know they are only a few days old, but normally, I would save those for the dogs or scramble them and feed them back to the hens. We've had two hens that have exhibited changes in their laying behaviour lately. One RIR mix started laying on the coop floor in a...

Amish egg basket or wire egg basket - which do you prefer?

I found a really cute small wire basket at Hobby Lobby when it was on the 50% off sale. I put a cloth in the bottom to help cushion the eggs. Anything you have handy can work, though. My grandmother used to use an old, large coffee can. She used old coffee cans for a lot of things. Also...

    What is Pretty Girl ?

RIR mix?? Production red mix? She IS pretty, whatever she is. Our original bunch of hens that we got from the local feed store were labled particular breeds, but are most likely mixes of those said breeds. Whatever hatchery that the store ordered them from didn't have really good consistency...

I would like some advice but I live in a mild winter climate?

We're in Pensacola and we keep a box fan going in the coop during the summer. My poor girls still sit in their nest boxes and pant, but I've never had them lay out in the open. When I've found eggs outside the coop, they're always under some kind of cover. Beth

Getting some new birds - couple of questions

Yeah, I'd be careful with the little ones too. Have had little ones escape from the grow-out pen into the older hen's pen and get really beaten up (scalped). Beth

    Why the raised brown speckling

I get that too, with only one of my EEs. Sometimes they're smooth and solid colored, other times rough with the tiny brown speckles. Doesn't seem to correspond to more free range time or anything else that I can pair it with. Beth

    growing wheat grass

Where does everyone get their grains to sprout? We have a small flock (less than 20) and I have BOSS that I got at Lowes in the bird feeding section and our local health foods coop has bulk wheat (I think). Do you use regular bagged oats like you get at the feed store? Any other grains that...

I started a page of Chicken Proof Plants

Mine don't bother foliage from bulbs such as: daffodil, narcissus, onions, garlic, crinum. I also have a few plants in my butterfly garden that haven't been touched: a couple varieties of sages, duranta, rue, firebush. Beth

    egg cartons ?

Friends and our customers save their cartons for us, so we recycle. I do make my own labels that I put on the lid with the dates the eggs were collected. Re styrofoam cartons: We now have a couple of outlets to recycle styrofoam cartons. Our county recycling program takes them now, as does...

My girls don't like flax seeds

How long do you soak them? Just until the jelly-like consistency? Have always ground mine, but would like to try this if the nutrients are more bioavailable. Beth

    New Bucket Feeders

Looks like a great idea! Look forward to seeing how well they work. We made some PVC tube feeders a few weeks ago and are liking how they're working for us. Beth

Golden Retriever goes nuts over chicks - Help!!!

Well, here's the thing. I've had goldens for 25 years. They were developed to be birdy - they're supposed to be highly interested. How old is your boy? If he's young, then that's pretty typical. If you've not ever done an obedience class with him, I'd try to get in one so that you can learn...

    Respiratory Infection???

Thanks, I was just hoping it might be something that sounded like a common chicken illness, but I have not been able to find anything specific to the syptoms ours are having. Last year was hot and humid here to - okay, so on the Gulf Coast, every summer is hot and humid - but we had no...

    Respiratory Infection???

From that chart (thanks): "Discharge from nostrils, sneezing, foam in corner of eye, swollen sinus under eye.Rattling breathing, sweet sickly smell." No sneezing, swollen sinuses and not really rattling, and no sweet sickly smell. They're eating fine, don't seem lethargic really - more like...

    Respiratory Infection???

We're on hen #4 now that started a croupy, honking noise. After a couple of days, I noticed a clear nasal discharge and bubbles in the corner of the eyes of the first one to exhibit symptoms. Called my vet and looked online here and it sounded like an upper respiratory infection. Not sure...

Question on Thomas Pharr's chicken coop article

Our Lowes in P'Cola has a corrugated polycarbonate roofing. Think they have it in green. We were looking at it last year to redo our greenhouse with. Beth

    Tylan 50

What is the bubbly eye a symptom of? My BO has started this in the last couple of days along with a weird squawk. Another thread indicated URI. Described it to my vet who does avian stuff and he prescribed Doxycycline for 7 days. Is this a URI? Beth
