well, honestly, i moved the feed and water out to near him. I also throw scratch and grass all over in there. He hides in the corner when we come in, but is all over the place otherwise. He has yet to go INTO the coop, though. He seems to enjoy the sun a LOT more than those shadows in there.
Sorry, I have been pretty busy.
Yes (s)he is doing great. We are 98% certain it is a he. The beard is about 3 inches long, no feathers up the back of the head, and the dew lap has been extended out a few inches. It seems to shrink up when we are out there though - like it is a fear thing or...
Hmm, well that is unexpected... I'll post some pics tomorrow when it is light. We got it for thanksgiving hoping to fatten it up some more. I will be a little disappointed if it's a hen since they don't get as big, but either way it was a great price for what should be a great meal.
My wife and I picked up a bourbon red at the feed store today. He already has that chest beard thing, looks about 10-14 weeks, i think. Anyway, we put him into the empty side of our chicken coop. I am concerned that he won't find the water or feed we have hanging in there. We left them hanging...
Hey all, I was thinking about getting some eggwash when I order my egg cartons, and was wondering if it washes the natural bloom off of the eggs. I know that needs to be there, and that commercial egg producers put on a fake bloom. Is there something I should do to the eggs after I use an...
Hmm, good point on the roo.... we moved him in so that it would be easier to mix the flocks later. He was getting very cantankerous when a whole new set of girls next to him and he wanted to claim them.
he has been doing good for them though. he has taught them where to roost, when to come in...
Otherwise, they are doing great. Ruby, the red headed naked neck who likes to sing a lot, has gotten very personable with us. The rest seem right at home too. And a few have even gotten some good flight feathers back - he had clipped them - enough to use the roosts we have in there.
Hey all.
A co worker of mine found out he was unable to have chickens where he lived, so he gave me his 13 layers. They are only about 8 months old and have been laying very well for him.
I moved them into our extra coop, and moved our dominant rooster in with them. The next day I noticed HUGE...
OK, I cracked open the huge one and cooked it today. It wasn't a normal double yolker. It had 2 full large eggs in it. The yolks were the same size, and had all the white you would expect too
was very nummy

Must be an easter egger!
Sorry, the green egg question confuses me The large green egg shaped object above the gigantic egg is a lime (put in for size comparisons) and the green egg thingies underneath the eggs is our camping egg carrier we use to collect them in.
From the coloration, I think it most likely came from one of our buff orpingtons. We also have some red sexlinks and barred rocks in there. The BR tend to lay smaller ones, and the RSL (who usually lay the bigger ones) seem to have a darker egg.
We got this one from one of our girls today. The one on the right is a normal sized large egg, and it is a standard ole lime from the grocery store above for reference.
What kind of casings did you use for the links and sticks? And where did you get them? We have only been able to do bulk sausage so far. can't find casings around here other than Gander Mountain.
I found that the local co-op will order fishmeal at $38/50# bag and it is 62%.
I could go with soybean meal, however. A farm supply place near here carries that at $11/50# bag and it is 46%.
With the fishmeal, I would only have to add 2 parts per 17 to get the 28% I need. With the soybean, I...
does anyone know what I can add to standard 20/24% chick starter to increase the protein level to somewhere around the 28% range? I was thinking something like fishmeal, but I have really no idea where I can get it.
Any suggestions anyone?

If you order from Welp they have a minimum order of 15 per breed. If you order less than the min, then they only add a $1.50 surcharge to the order. So, it is a preferred minimum order, but you could order just 1 if you wanted to.
I know the broad breasted varieties of turkeys get large/eating size in about 4 - 5 months, but I haven't seen any time tables on any heritage breeds.
Next year we are wanting to get some Bronze BBs for early eating, and get some heritage as well, such as a Naragansett or Royal Palm, for a...
at this time of the year, I would grab a pumpkin from the grocery store and just cut it in half for them.
Feed them whole, with the hull on. There is an enzyme in the pumpkin seed hull that paralyzes internal parasites, and the extra roughage allows the chicken to pass the worms easier. Our...
