What type of predator would kill in this manner?

I found Alice, a 4 year old Light Brahma, dead yesterday. There was a pile of feathers where she had been attacked and her body was about 6 feet away up next to the coop. She appeared to have a large wound in her side (the body was stiff and it was see. also super gross.) but the most prominent...

Can you help me figure out why Daphne died?

I found Daphne, a 3.5 year old Red Sex Link dead in the run today. No injuries. For about the last 7-10 days she has been coming and hanging out by the house, just lying next to the patio door. The birds are always around the house (the food comes from there!) so I didn't think much of it, but...

Penny the one legged chicken has lost her other leg. What on earth is going on?

Well, I just sent Penny to chicken heaven, if there is such a thing. I have never had to kill one of my birds before. Heck, I've never killed anything larger than a bug. It went pretty well. I don't think she suffered much if at all. Still, I am surprised at how overwhelming my emotions were...

Penny the one legged chicken has lost her other leg. What on earth is going on?

I would guess brittle bones of all those choices. Ever since we adopted her last summer her feet have been funky looking, but they never looked gangrenous or infected or whatever. She's also seven years old, so I'm sure her age is a factor. This is a pic of her leg that lost the first foot...

Penny the one legged chicken has lost her other leg. What on earth is going on?

Nope, no scaly leg mites. Both the feet that fell off and the leg above it have no signs of mites. And it's a super clean "break." so bizarre.

Penny the one legged chicken has lost her other leg. What on earth is going on?

Original thread is here. It's been a week since Penny's right foot was found dangling off her leg and I amputated it. Her leg was healing rather nicely. Eating, drinking, pooping, being spoiled living inside and whatnot. I didn't pick her up at all yesterday. This morning I picked her up to check...

Penny's foot is nearly off. Can we save her? UPDATE: foot amputated.

Great to know about the vet wrap. I'm going to go get some right now. I had it just wrapped in gauze and then taped, but her little stump is so short that it just falls off if she wiggles. I was going to rig something up to wrap it all the way around her, but I'll try that with the vet wrap...

Penny's foot is nearly off. Can we save her? UPDATE: foot amputated.

I amputated Penny's foot. It was really just hanging there by, but there was still one thin bone attached--a foot bone I think. The procedure was quick and she seemed to handle it well. I treated the wound with antibiotic ointment and wrapped it, but I can't get the wrap to stay on it. Penny...

Penny's foot is nearly off. Can we save her? UPDATE: foot amputated.

Thank you for checking on her! She is doing well. She is currently living part time in the heated garage and part time in the house. I'd keep her in the house all the time, but we have a dog who looks at her like the moment we turn our backs he is going to eat her. Her leg is wrapped and she is...

Penny's foot is nearly off. Can we save her? UPDATE: foot amputated.

Amputating it has occurred to me as well. If I decide to go this route, how on earth do I do it? Just get a really sharp knife and make it quick? Is there anything I can do to help her as far as pain goes? She's just so darn healthy other than this foot--I hate to put her down.

Penny's foot is nearly off. Can we save her? UPDATE: foot amputated.

Actually I was wrong. It's not her elbow but its right where her foot stops and her leg begin. Not a joint. I have it wrapped and she's calm.

Penny's foot is nearly off. Can we save her? UPDATE: foot amputated.

Penny is a six year old bantam Belgian D'Uccle who we inherited from another family. Before we got her, she had problems with her feet and some of her toes were crooked and she had lost all her nails and whatnot. She has never moved around very well, but has thrived nonetheless. Today we noticed...

I have an eggeater and she ate one of my broody's eggs. Advice?

sigh.... This morning I put green food coloring in a few eggs and stuck them out there. They had already eaten two eggs (but not my broody's eggs). A bunch of them had shell on their beaks, so I couldn't tell who started it. Also, maybe my flock is just a bunch of diabolical egg eaters. Went...

Blown eggs? Like blow out the yolks and whites? How do you seal them? Great idea! I just am a little slow on the uptake.

I have an eggeater and she ate one of my broody's eggs. Advice?

I have long suspected I had an egg eater. I will frequently find eggs with dried yolk on them, but have never caught the culprit. Usually only one a day goes missing, so I wasn't too worried about it. Last night I gave Carrot the Broody Brahma 9 fertile eggs to replace the infertile ones she's...

    Space per Chicken

Honestly if I was to rebuild my coop, which I am not doing, I would build for 6-7 sq ft per LF that I planned to have. This makes for happier chickens, easier poop management, more room to move around while doing chicken chores, and most importantly it leaves you room to add some more chickens...

One of the girls is regularly laying VERY soft shelled eggs.

We've been finding our eggs covered in yolk when we went out at the end of the day to collect them, yet it didn't seem anyone was eating eggs. No shells or yolky beaks or anything. Today I went to dump poopboards and collect eggs (didn't get them yesterday) and found two very very soft shelled...
