These are my chickens wandering around my backyard at six months of age. At the time, I thought they were both girls, but it turns out the black was not only not an australorp, she also wasn't a she. But at least I have the araucana hen I wanted. Now, if only she'd lay some eggs. The araucana...

Thanks, incubatingisfun, it helps knowing that.

Chick hatched without upper eyelids—what can I do?

Thanks, 3chimama and hd_mechanic. The deed is done. I couldn't leave her, as hard as it was. Her eyes were already developing a film or something over them from the brooder light. I didn't think there was much of a chance for her, but I was hoping someone had had a similar experience and...I...

Thanks, redhen. I'm off to do that now, I guess. Sooner is better than later.

Chick hatched without upper eyelids—what can I do?

I just had a Show Girl chick hatch without any upper eyelids about an hour ago. I thought I noticed something was wrong when I checked in on her progress earlier; it kind of looked like her eye was too large. Now that she's hatched, I see that she can't fully close her eyes at all, just move the...

Pure breed chick variety box- Ameraucanas, Araucanas, FBCM, Silkies

Quote: Thanks, SpeckledHills! I agree on not posting pics--I can't help but want them ALL (and then maybe just a few more!). I really can't resist such cuteness. eta: Plus, I don't think anyone would be disappointed with these, if they were an impulse buy. And the pics! The araucana eggs I...

Post your adds for California Wanted or for sale

Quote: I'm in the San Gabriel Valley, I think that's about two hours north of you, hensplease. Whether they all hatch out okay, I believe there are some SQ whites, and PQ lavenders. I'll have to check the markings. The Araucanas are purebred Araucanas, not Ameraucana or EE--they're rumpless...

Pure breed chick variety box- Ameraucanas, Araucanas, FBCM, Silkies

I have some of AHappyChick's chicks and they're beautiful. I've hatched out all of these except for the Araucanas (which are in the incubator right now!) and they are gorgeous little babies. The split lavenders' feathers are coming in beautifully, and all the Silkies are such little fluff balls...

    Drawing?

Quote: What a sweet puppy. Great job! I haven't done any painting or drawing in years, it's one of those "when I get some time" things. Maybe I'll put it on my New Year's resolution list.

Any SHOWS/TRADES/SWAPS in SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA; LOS ANGELES AREA??

I'm giving this a bump, because I'd be interested in this as well. Even an hour's driving distance, like Antelope Valley, Long Beach, etc. Or how about tips on setting one up?

1 hour left!!!!! Blue & Black Ameraucana Hatching eggs sky blue

I've gotten eggs from AHappyChick and she packs them REALLY WELL. And out of three dozen, all developed except one--and that one cracked due to an evil mail man.

    California-Southern

Hi, Carlyle! I'm not sure where you are, but having searched around a lot myself, I can tell you it's pretty difficult to find good chickens around my area. I'm in the San Gabriel Valley (Los Angeles County), probably not in a city anyone's heard of. About ten minutes away from the L.A...

    UGH!!!!! Need Help!

The temperature of the water should reflect the interior temperature of the eggs and the real temp of the incubator. My digital thermometer fluctuated with airflow, but I had a fan going in mine, so it'd swing between 99 and 102. A shot glass should work.

    Anyone want free milkweed seeds?

I haven't seen any growing out here (Los Angeles County) but the only time I looked for it was when my son got a butterfly house with caterpillar eggs. I had to BUY milkweed for them. I looked up their requirements and it sounds like they'd do fine just about anywhere, so I'll give it a shot in...

    UGH!!!!! Need Help!

I had the same problem, so I put a small jar of warm water in the incubator and let it sit over night. Then I took the temperature with an oral thermometer. (Okay, it was really my kids' old rectal thermometer, but I cleaned it!) I figure those are much more accurate, especially since you can...
