I have started giving 2 cups of scratch a night to our girls...we have 33 girls right now, buff orps. Is 2 cups too much??
My main question on this is that we use pine bedding in the coop and that is where I have been giving them their scratch to try to get them moving the bedding around more...
Hi,
We are finishing up with a molt, I think....finally!
We have 1.5 year olds and 6 month old buff orps.
I have never seen any evidence of worms but should we go ahead and deworm now while we are still not getting many eggs? How long do we have to throw the eggs out for?
I read alot of...
Hi,
I am still trying to decide which way to go this winter!!
We did straw last year...it is a MESS to deal with when cleaning....
Will pine bedding be enough....they have a concrete floor...how thick of a layer of bedding do they need when its sub zero outside? We do have a heat lamp in the...
Hi,
I've seen afew posts about giving chickens cat food for a high protein way of getting feathers to grow back...
How often do you give them the cat food is my question on that..and how much???
I have 40 chickens ( buff orps ) and the other thing is that I think they are almost done with...
Hmm...I always wash our eggs before selling...usually wait till I have around 8 - 10 dozen and then I gently wash them all before I bring them in for selling...is this bad????I wash them in water that is just a little warm...not even warm but warmer than the egg is out of the fridge.. I mean...
You have my interest perked as well...in MN...looking for a better way to keep the coop this winter other than Straw since that is so messy....would sand be warm enough????? how thick would it need to be?
Hi everyone, I am in MN and winter weather is quickly approaching us here unfortunately.
Last year I used straw in the coop and I am really hoping to NOT go that route this winter unless you all feel its necessary to keep them warm. We didn't lose even one of our chickens last winter even with...
when one of mine got it this is what she did:
her neck never went limp really.
her neck would start going down and down and she would almost look like she was going into a seizure and her head would literally go down between her legs and it got to the point where she couldn't even really...
Go get yourself some Poly-Vi-Sol drops without the iron.....if it is wry neck then I have some experience with that. I had one that came down with this and she is perfectly fine now..it took a good couple of weeks tho to get her well again. Isolate yours into a kennel or something...make sure...

We just put our 18 week old girls & one Roo in with our 1.5 year olds..all Buff Orps.
We sell the majority of our eggs and sometimes some of our eggs are not that big...
Is there any way at all that we'll be able to tell which eggs are from our little ones once they start laying?
Should...
Hi!
Our "babies" will be 18 weeks old this coming Sunday. We have 2 1 1/2 year old roos that are being taken OUT of the coop tomorrow night and given to a lady that is going to keep them for pets...forever! So I am very happy about that.
What that leaves us with is:
1 year and half old...

...on our 23 layers...we have never gotten more than 17 eggs in a day and that was a really good day...norm has been around 12 or down to 8. Lately we've only been seeing around 6 to 8 a day.
Can anyone with buff orps tell me what *normal* would be?? Are they supposed to lay every day...
Our new Buff Orps will be 17 weeks old this coming Sunday...looking for advice as to how best to integrate them in with our 1 year old Buff Orps!
We have had them in the same coop for quite a while now...well over a month maybe closer to 2 months. We have just had them separated by chicken...
We have 23 buff orps that turned a year old back on April 7th....and we had more eggs during this last winter than what we are getting now...we had been getting up to 18 eggs a day in the Spring..then the wet weather hit and its been cooler this Summer and the most we are seeing now is between 8...
Ok, I need some good advice on what , if anything, there is to do to stop a hen from being broody! We now have 5 of them doing this!!
if I make them go outside with the others can this help to break the cycle??
