    Limping roster

Thank you Mary for the advice. I agree darkness is our friends when it comes to catching chickens. A quick update on Mr. K. I released him in the coop yesterday and he's doing fine. He still will keep his leg up from time to time, but he's clearly so much happier being around the girls. The...

    Limping roster

Thank you Shadrach. I will try to get him out of the crate and examine his limbs better, however I'm concerned that he may be over-reacting in fear and hurt himself more. If you read my post Wyorp Rock he is already quite leery of me. He was born here, but with a hundred and thirty chickens I...

    Limping roster

Thanks for the reply. I have the standard durvet vitamins & electrolytes. It only has the B-12 vitamin. Should I get him some B-2? I spent some time with him in the garage, but he is still leary about me and is throwing me some worried looks when I get too close to him. I guess last night's...

    Limping roster

I forgot to answer regarding the bumblefoot. That was my first idea as he was walking on his toes. I checked very carefully both of his feet and couldn't find anything that would look like bumblefoot or any abrasions. I gave him some scratch and scrambled eggs where I spread the aspirin. He eat...

    Limping roster

Thank you for the reply Wyorp Rock. I can try to take a pic, but Mr K was far less cooperative last evening when I took him out of his kennel to clean him up and add some straw. Maybe it was the aspirin that took effect, or, more likely, the site of the two arms coming at him while he was at the...

    Limping roster

My Welsummer rooster, Mr. K (as it is the Kellogg's rooster after all), has been keeping his right leg up when standing for a few days. Yesterday, he would not roost so I took him in for a closer look. His right leg is warmer than his left and the joint at the tibia is warm and seems a little...

    Lethargic pullet with fever

I have a 19 weeks old pullet that is displaying signs of illness. The other pullets of the same breed seem fine. The pullet in question seems smaller, her comb and wattles seem a little darker and withdrawn, her shanks feel warm and she had a little bit of mucus coming from her left nostril. On...

    My girls are dying!!!

Thanks. Yes, that was a relief! My hens are "heritage" breeds so I, naively, thought they would be more resilient. They did come from a commercial hatchery. I guess that counts more than the breed itself. Live and learn....

    My girls are dying!!!

It was peritonitis. Thank you for asking.

    My girls are dying!!!

Thank you for your responses. I am preparing her right now to send her to the lab for a necropsy.

    My girls are dying!!!

In about 8 days, I have had two hens dying unexpectedly. They both were 3 and 1/2 years old and showed no symptoms of anything. Both were acting sleepy in the morning and were dead within about three hours. They both looked beautiful. No sign of parasites, tumor, buildup of fluid in the...

    Ending a life peacefully

One of my hens has been sick for a long time and I had been hoping Nature would follow its course. Her belly has been distended for a while and she is now waddling around. But she is still motivated by food and has been eating and drinking. This morning I finally had a chance to look at her up...

    Double wall coop

Thank you to all for your replies. I'll leave it as is and DE the inside. I have 3 feet wide hardware cloth all around the perimeters 9x14. 2' on the outside, 1' inside. I have another coop that doesn't have hardware cloth on the perimeter. I was lucky for 2 years. This year the rats found it...

    Double wall coop

Hello fellow coop builders, I am building a coop with 6x7 pallets and sheeti g the outside with recycled pieces of plywood. Because of all the slats and their potential to harbor mites I am thinking of building an inside wall as well to cover all these slats. One issue I can think of is that...

    Wild cockrel

Good news, my little "Houdini" was caught. Or, more exactly he let me catch him. He is now safe and sound in a coop. It might be my imagination, but I think he is relieved and feeling safe at last. Aart, I understand your concerns, but you don't have to worry. I totally agree with you. Thank...

    Yep, considered that too.

    Wild cockrel

I have a pastured eggs business. However, the "business" part is to be interpreted very loosely. Frankly, I just have 100+ pets, trying to focus more on the business perspective though. Got a great customer base who love the eggs. So I expand to keep up with demand.

    Wild cockrel

... I can see total chaos in that coop trying to catch him. Never thought chicken keeping could be so hard core!!!!

I have thought of that and that will be an option. Hiwever, given my experience with him,

    Wild cockrel

Oops almost forgot. I has the left wing somewhat clipped. I did that after one of his many escapes. Since they are on pasture, I don't want to overdo it. Obviously, I don't have to worry about that!
