We want to hatch some bob whites and it will be our first time. We have had chickens for 3 years but not quail.
I have a few questions.
If we are going to hatch them. How many eggs should we order if our pen for them is 46x23.5? It has an enclosed run that is 43x40. ( it's a rabbit hutch)...
The only one I know that may work is scratch and pecks starter feed. They told me it would work for quail and it's verified gmo free. It's 20.5% protein. Lower than game bird feed.
We have a cage that is 46.5x 23.7, It also has a ramp and enclosed " run under it Run is 43x30. It is a re- purposed rabbit hutch, We brooded chicks in it in the past. We are planning on hatching our own bobwhite quail. How many eggs should we get? I know they won't all hatch, but what is a...
What size brooder should I start with? I have an old rabbit hutch that they will be going into after they are a little older. They are coming next week!
I have only brooded chickens in the spring when the temps were in the 30-40's. We are getting some chicks the week on July 15th. The temps here have been in the mid 80's or high 80's lately and the lows are about 65-70. Will I need a heat lamp during the day?
Any advice for brooding in...
Does it matter what kind of water you use. We have city water, so has chlorine and fluoride in it. We have a RO water filter for drinking. Should I use filtered water or just plain tap water for the fodder? I may have to do a test and see if there is any difference between the two. We just got...
Thanks, We do supplement light. This winter had some very cold weather. We had goo luck with integrating the hens we have now when the younger ones were being added to the older ones. I would just rather have them be the same age and not have to deal with integrating them. They get very good...
Here's where we're at right now. We have 5 hens that are 2 yrs old, finishing up their first full moult. We have 4 hens that are 1 yr old ( all EE) We don't have the space to start another flock and cull all of our hens we have now. I'm not that happy with the rate of production of the EE so...
We are planning our flock for next year. We have RSL , Dom and EE right now. The RSL are awesome layers and have huge eggs.
We want to try some different breeds next time, but not sure of the amount of egg production to expect from them. We get hatchery birds.
I know sometimes real life egg...
Our hens are going through their fist full molt. One of the girl just got done with heavy molting and her feathers are coming in. Her comb is very light and slightly flopped over ( she 's a RSL) It also looks dry. Is this normal?
Thanks
We feed a soy and corn free feed, our girls do well on it. It does have fish in it for more protein ( only 16% though). We have allergy issues with soy so we can't use a feed that has it. How do they get enough protein in the wild? I guess we may not be able to do quail.
We feed organic and soy free to our chickens, ( for many reasons) . I have not seen any game bird feed here that is organic or soy free. Is there a way to mix your own that could work for quail?
Thanks
We live in MN, it hasn't been above 32 in over a month. Most days under 20, sub zero nights. We have 4 EE that are about 9 months old. They are proving to be very poor winter layers, we get one egg a week from them. Some days none. Before it was cold most days we would get 3-4 eggs from them...
I noticed last night that one of our 20 week old EE has a split beak . Her upper beak has a split right down the center of it. She can eat fine. Should we be worried it will get worse? Will it grow out? I have a feelign it happended when she was chased by the other hens. We don't call her Skitz...
