What is Your Favorite Word to Describe Your Flock?

"The chickeninas" for hens. [Pronounced: chicken-een-ahs] New pullets are collectively called "the chickenininas" until they start laying or thereabouts. (N.B. These terms are only used between DH and myself.) The roosters are invariably referred to as "the roosters". When calling them, I...

    Peeps in Europe!

My other three hens that are like that and I've had them for longer than the three I've mentioned. Actually, those used to be a lot tamer, but one of the dogs got into their enclosure one night and chased them. Many feathers were lost and the chickens were seriously traumatised...

    Peeps in Europe!

*LOL* Well, the Araucana and Marans that I got together with the Leghorn ate from my hand a lot sooner. They come to meet before I get to the gate and follow closely as I carefully (to avoid stepping on them!) make my way to the coop. I can touch them and pick them up (which I don't often do)...

    Peeps in Europe!

My Leghorn is taking food from my fingers! It's taken almost three months, progress has been slow and gradual but finally she started taking bits of peach peel that I offered. At first she'd snatch and dart off to the other end of the coop, but by the end of the session she was sticking around...

    British chicken coop question

Oh gosh, no need to apologise for that, you haven't offended me! Thank you for explaining the ads - I have an ad blocker so I don't see any of them! Yes, they are expensive. I initially balked and resisted buying one because of the price. Initially, we'd made a very rustic semi-open coop...

    Peeps in Europe!

Aw, they are lovely! I'm glad they're settling in. :) That's such a nice space! I had no idea there were breeding clubs that provided areas for keeping chickens. Is this common in Germany? It sounds a bit like having an allotment (vegetable garden) for people with no gardens?

    British chicken coop question

You're not in the market for one of these coops, but surely a person who is interested in buying one would read beyond the introduction. If someone is going to fork out between 550-950 pounds/dollars and doesn't look at the specs or read through the page (which is hardly onerous), well... I...

    British chicken coop question

If you read the specs further down the page they are more specific: You choose the length of run you want, in one metre segments. You can also choose no run (if you have your own run, for example) and not to buy the wheels either. Yep!

    Peeps in Europe!

Hi Astrid! Congratulations on finally being able to get your chickens!! :wee Wow, you've had a long wait but I'm glad your patience has paid off! Your set-up sounds really good. I look forward to seeing photos if you'd like to share them. :)

Big Girl is limping! Help me, please!

As far as I know, the common practice for vegans who run animal sanctuaries (or those who keep rescued chickens) is to feed the eggs back to the chickens, sometimes encouraging them to get into the habit of breaking the eggs (for) themselves. This way the chickens benefit from the nutrition of...

    Farm dog breeds

This Wiki offers an extremely thorough guide to: Identifying a Responsible Breeder Personally, I don't subscribe to all the stipulations they list, which is partly because I am European and this is primarily a North American guideline, where culture, laws and customs are different to my part of...

    Farm dog breeds

Yes, they are awesome dogs! Spanish Water Dogs are different (though similar!) to Portuguese Water Dogs. Spanish Water Dogs have more of the guarding instinct, IIRC. Portuguese Water Dogs became popular because your previous President had one, so perhaps Spanish Water Dogs may not be as pricey...

    Free range chickens.

Mine are free to forage in an area within a moveable fence; their coop, run and fencing gets moved periodically to different places and according to the season (e.g. for more shade in the summer). The dogs are active at keeping potential predators at bay and respect the temporary fencing as a...

Salaam! Greetings from the other side of the Strait and welcome to BYC! I look forward to seeing photos of your Moroccan Beldi and in due course, learning about the breed and what they are like as layers. I love Naked Necks; they are great for the climate. :)

Comment by 'Stiletto' in article 'Prefab vs. Hand-Built Coops.'

I have a prefab coop too, though mine is made of plastic. Like yourself, I read many people advise against them. However, a good friend of mine recommended the coop I have, she and friends of hers had them for years and found them easy to clean thoroughly and to move around. Both these factors...
