CHICKEN HEALTH AND WELLBEING
It seemed to me that it might be helpful to write up, as many others have done, my learning experiences regarding the health and well-being of my girls...

www.indoorducks.com. They specialize in duck shoes and duck diapers, but also they do chicken shoes in all sizes, and special silkie shoes to accomodate feathered feet. My friends joke that I should get a little tiny fleece jacket for Fish, to match the shoes. I keep telling them...
I've had my girls for a year and a half now, and I still worry and fuss and generally act like, well, a mama hen. This fall, I purchased a pair of chicken shoes for one of my girls, because of a problem with bumblefoot. They're great for that, actually - keep the bandages on and the feet...
...thanks, guys! I love looking at all of the elaborate, beautiful, professional-looking coops that some folks build or buy, but there is something *incredibly* satisfying about using my own two hands (and a few power tools) to build a henhouse with materials that would otherwise have ended...
Possible point of interest - there is a thread or two on this site regarding caponizing roosters... usually done on meat birds, I think, but it occurred to me that it could also be done to pet birds (indoor or outdoor). We regularly geld horses and neuter dogs and cats, so why not other...
I just finished rebuilding my little back door henhouse using all recycled materials, including pallets, shipping crates, old fence boards, leftovers from my parents' newly built house, and plywood scraps from the original henhouse, which was pretty much just a plywood box.
I got all fancy and...
Is this feather *picking* (plucking feathers off of another bird), or just eating feathers that have been molted? All of my girls eat the body feathers they've molted; I've also heard that it is an issue of protein, and I upped my girls' protein with supplements and dried mealworms, but they...
Thanks, guys! I do a weekly health check on each girl and have not found any sign of mites or lice, so I'm pretty confident that these are actual fault bars. During September, when they were doing most of their feather growth, they were eating mainly layer crumble and some occasional scratch...
My girls have all gone through their first adult molt, and I've noticed that all of them have some fault bars in their feathers. I'm guessing that this is something that people who show birds know a bit about, since fault bars (also called stress bars) can increase the likelihood of feathers...
I occasionally wash my chooks, when they've gotten particularly muddy, or before the annual vet visit. I have a detachable showerhead , so I just put on shorts or a bathing suit, and get right in there with my chosen victim. I just let them stand on the floor of the shower, and I use the...
For friendly/snuggly I second white Cochin and white Silkie, if you need pure white birds; if black hackle feathers are acceptable, light brahmas are also extremely sweet, and are fair layers (~3 - 5 eggs/bird/week).
I'd also guess Brahma + ??? Maybe Dark Brahma x Buff Orp? I'm a complete novice when it comes to dominant and recessive traits in chooks, but I *think* pea comb is dominant, so it would make sense for such a cross to have a pea rather than a single. And I think leg feathering gets "diluted"...
...are naturally very calm and easy to handle, but even my active little buckeye (a breed known to be more skittish) will let me pick her up without *too* much protesting. I've held them all multiple times each day from day 1. With adult birds, I'm not sure there's much you can do beyond...
Chickens do molt at this time of year, and they usually replace all or most of their feathers. They typically start with the head and neck, then the breast and back, then bum and legs. The flight feathers go somewhere in the middle there. If your girl is molting, you should see tiny new pin...
I experimented with a lot of different protein sources to boost my girls' protein intake during and after molt, including quinoa, yogurt, TVP, fish, and a variety of worms. The best thing I found, and (happily) the girls' favorite, is dried mealworms. You can get tubs of them at...
Um, also, feed her some whole milk yogurt with live cultures every day- this will also boost her fat intake and help her gain weight, as well as repopulating her intestinal flora (antibiotics kill the bad stuff *and* the good stuff in the body, so it's important to put the good stuff back).
