I will have had chickens for a year in April, and they are still surprising me regularly. I work night shift, and come home between 5 and 6 am, and open the door between the hen house and run before turning in. The girls are always catatonic when I do, and it's still pitch dark outside. This...
My girls are free range when we are home. I'm sure I'm not the only one whose hens will show up on the front walk demanding treats when they see me through the window. I've been surprised lately though, when they have seemingly come to get me to show me things.
The first time this happened, I...
I would personally never do this, weenie that I am, I deal with enough human poo at work (RN), thankyouverymuch! When I was a kid though, we used to go to a cabin owned my my mom's (then) boyfriend's family that had a composting toilet. It did not stink.
If you put them together while sleeping, plan to be sitting coop-side first thing in the morning. I have tried that twice now, and nobody was the least bit fooled.
If food is taxed in your state, you may also have to pay sales taxes. As long as you are legit with the state to sell the eggs, I think the write off is a marvelous idea. I used to have an in home business, and was able to demonstrate a financial loss for several years, which really helped my...
My chicken had the exact same "w" shaped chicp in her beak. Within just a couple of days of free ranging per usual, it had flattened out, and now, several weeks later, the top, which was chipped, has grown some, and the bottom, which was not, has worn down wnough that her beak is back to normal.
Hehehe, I had a good one last night! I ordered in food, and the girls were ranging in my fenced yard. They were no where to be seen when the kid came to the door, probably hanging out under the shrubs. I guess they smelled the food, or something, because he turned around to leave and he was...
If I had to cull a hen, I certainly wouldn't do it curbside! I don't know why they assume we would try to make it as public and horrific as possible, lol.
I guess the thought just horrified someone when the ordinance was being written. Like I said, I could see the point if I was going to open up a broiler house and abattoir right here in the neighborhood, but with a 5 hen limit, who's going to raise meat birds anyway? It wouldn't even feed my...
If she has an enlarged thyroid, she will probably need surgery to have it at least partially removed. Then she would have to take thyroid hormone the rest of her life to replace what the gland used to make. She ought to have that looked at, because cancer doesn't just pop up out of nowhere, it...
I haven't read this whole thread, just the beginning and end. I hope I'm not butting in here, but you did want advice, and I gather I am a little older and have had my heart broken a few time more than you. He isn't chasing you hon. Not a bit. He is in fact stringing you along, and he admits...
