which breeds of dog around hens

I have had 2 beagles. One was great with the chickens and one is not allowed outside unless the chickens are in the coop. So, it depends on the dog itself.

My puppy is my peeps new predator!

We have a 6 year old rescue beagle who is almost perfect in every way. We adopted him 5 months ago and have been able to train him to come, stay, walk off lease and leave the cats alone, but I have not been able to train him to leave the chickens alone. We have decided that a good fence between...

    Why are people so weird?

I give my eggs away for free. The nice lady across the street brought over beautiful flowers one day. The other person I give mine away to is the couple who drive my mother to Temple on Friday nights. My wonderful yard guy always gets one or 2 dozen every two weeks. My boss gets a dozen every...

    Water cups overflowing

They were floats. No matter what my DH tried, all 4 overflowed. I sent them back. I took the cup that came with the waterer and took it apart and soak it in vinegar. This seem to take all the mineral deposits off and then it worked again. I have found out that there are two types of cups. they...

    Free range or large run

I free range from dawn to dusk, and have been for 3 years. The only bird I have ever lost to a predator, was when we adopted a rescue beagle. He ran past my DH into the backyard while the chickens were outside. He is no longer allowed out back until the chickens are put in the coop for the...

The left picture is the cup the waterer came with, the right picture is the replacement. I didn't know there was more the one kind of water cup.

    Water cups overflowing

I bought new water cups to replace a couple that broke from old age. The float in theses new cups are at the top of the cup, instead of towards the bottom of the old cups. This is causing the cup to fill all the way to the top with water, so every time the chickens drink from the cup it...

    Feral cats - chicken predators?

We have a lot of cats in our neighbor. They do a great job catching rodents. I have never seen one attack my free ranging birds. If that cat has not killed any of your birds, let him go. He might be someone's pet.

Need advice on moving my flock to a warmer climate

We didn't have chickens in Eureka. But I think spring is a good choice. It will let them get use to the heat slowly.

Need advice on moving my flock to a warmer climate

That is a big temp change! We moved from Eureka 5 years ago, but landed in SLO. I would move in spring, give them a chance to get use to the heat gradually.

Old Fashioned, Common Sense Chicken Keeping.

We keep it simple. Our coop and run is just a dog kennel we got from the neighbor for $100. The nesting boxes are 5 gallon pots left over from trees we planted. The only thing I spent money on were feeders and waterers. My birds free range on our acre all day. Layer feed is in the run free...

Chicken Breed Focus - Blue Andalusian

How long does it take for the eggs to get bigger. My birds have been laying for 2 months and they are barely making medium size eggs. I am getting an egg a day from all of them. Don't think anyone has missed a day yet. But the eggs are smaller then I hoped for

My birds have been laying for a couple of months. I seem to be getting an egg a day from all 5 of my girls. They are medium size eggs and I am hoping they get a little bigger. The only problem I had was training them to come back and roost in the coop at night. They all wanted to roost in the...
