Thanks! Lots of info. Seems like from the poster, that I might have a chick/chicks with a defective shell gland. Is that okay? There's nothing I can do about that? Now I'm kinda paranoid - Seems like I have eggs with almost half of those symptoms that are pictured in the photos. How can I...
I found this funky looking egg today. She's an RIR and about 3 or 4 years old. I have about 2 dozen chickens, so I'm not exactly sure which hen it came from. I've never seen one like this, although there have been some thin shells. I put oyster shell out for them, but it doesn't seem to...
Thanks for the info. I've decided to get rid of the two 'game roosters' and keep the EE rooster. Can I sell the two game roosters? For how much? Or should I just give them away?
My neighbor gave us two roosters that just started crowing about a month ago. They seem to get along as long as they keep away from each other. I have about a dozen RIR's that they're hanging out with. Can you tell me what kind these roosters are?
Also, I ordered about 20 EE's and one came...
One of my hens doesn't look to good. Her crest is lighter than the rest and it's just flopping over. I read somewhere that it's not a good sign. She's been a little slow the past few days and will stand there looking all sleepy. I have seen her drink, but when she goes up to her food, she...
This chick is a little over a month old and it has a crooked beak. She's eating and growing fine, but I'm not sure if she's in pain. Is there anything that can be done about her beak?
It's a girl! Well, both are lady hens. I can tell from the previous photo I posted that the eggs do look different. I guess I really wasn't thinking the darker one was a hen. Whichever one is laying the lighter egg is pecking at it sometimes.
I posted this on another thread but figured...
Thanks. :)
I read this somewhere on here;
"An eggshell has a protective coating that prevents bacteria from entering the egg. To retain this coating, eggs should not be washed until just before use."
I wonder if the heat will still effect that??
I live in the desert where it reaches 110 during the day. My new chickens started laying in a spot where the sun hits them in the afternoon and I can't pick the eggs up until after 1:00. Sometimes when I pick them up later, the eggs are pretty hot. Are they safe to eat if they've been sitting...
I have heard of the sink/float test in water, but I got rid of them because I wasn't sure how long they were sitting there. The outside heat at 110 won't effect them? When I bring them in, they're super warm.
I also believe all those eggs are from the lighter chicken. I've only seen her...
I found those eggs! I'm so excited that at least one of them is a hen. I've found the lighter one in the nest and haven't heard anything from the darker one, as far as crowing is concerned.
My question is, how do I know if the eggs are any good? It gets up to 110 during the day and the...
Yeah, her feathers are growing in. They're both eating and drinking - The lighter one more than the darker one. The darker ones poop is a little different - Smaller and more compact, not as runny as chicken poop. The lighter one is getting to trust us more and is eating out of our hands. She...
