My husband was talking with our neighbor and said he got two chickens (not sure where or how he got them) and asked if we wanted them. My husband said yes and he brought them over this morning. Does anyone know what kind and how old they are? I know the lighter one looks a little beat up. :( I hope she's not sick and all her feathers will grow back soon. We have a dozen RIR and I've read to keep them separated just in case they're ill. How long do I have to do that?

Thank you.

The second picture looks like it might be an EE/ EE mix? maybe
Could you get some clearer pictures of the top one? A nice head picture and a side body shot?
Sure someone can help identify breeds and the sex.

It is a good idea to keep the birds separated for about a month. Then you can pen them up next to your RIR to makes sure they get along before putting them in with the rest of the flock. In a months time you will have a good idea of whether there are any health issues with them.
It took less than a week to discover a purchased bird of mine had gapeworm, very thankful she was separated from my main flock and I did not just throw her in.

Better to be safe than sorry.

They're kinda skittish so I wasn't able to get a clearer photo. I was looking it the darker ones legs and I think it's a rooster. It looks like it has that sharp thing sticking out. I was hoping for a hen because I've wanted EE's for a long time.

Thanks for the advice on keeping them separate for that long.

I know some hens do grow spurs too... on odd occasions.
As the photos are not super clear its hard to make out the comb on the brown one. Looks like it might be a pea or walnut comb maybe. Also the bush obscuring the tail also makes it harder to identify the sex.

As a lot of the feathers are missing on the top photo and it is also blurry yet again, making it tough to see, it is hard for me to make some basic deductions on sex at least. The top bird almost has a laying age hen look going on. However if it is under stress (from the missing feathers.. maybe moulting?) it could hinder the egg laying.

I know they can be a pain and not cooperative, but some new photos would really help.

I'm not sure what pea or walnut comb is, but it's small and wavy. The tail is pretty tall so I'm almost convinced it's a rooster. The feathers along it's neck are also shiny and I read somewhere that roosters have those. His feet are like a grey, blue/green color.

I'll try to get new photos tomorrow.

Thanks for the help! :)

What signs do I check for to see if they're sick?
I'm not sure what molting looks like, but the lighter one is missing feathers from butt and underneath also. :(
If the darker one is a rooster, I'd like to see if he'd mate with my RIR's. Maybe their chicks will lay colored eggs?

Both are hens. First one is a sexlink hen and the bottom one looks like an EE mix, especially with the pea comb you described.

I would dust them both for mites and keep them separated for a few weeks. The top one doesn't look sick to me. Just looks like she was picked on or over-mated and possibly a case of mites. Her feathers should grow back after a good molt.
