Two different chickens.

Thanks for the new photos...

The dark brown one has a game bird look to it.. Maybe an EE game bird mix.
The other one is (my guess) a hen. The missing feathers look more like it has been pecked at more than moulting. As someone mentioned before, should look better after a full moult anyway. Can you see new feathers growing in? As for sickness... Make sure they are eating, drinking and pooping normally, inspect for mites and watch their behaviour. Anything seems a little off will be noticeable by the fact you have chickens and would notice anything odd.

Yeah, her feathers are growing in. They're both eating and drinking - The lighter one more than the darker one. The darker ones poop is a little different - Smaller and more compact, not as runny as chicken poop. The lighter one is getting to trust us more and is eating out of our hands. She follows the darker one around. I put DE on the lighter one, I can't catch the darker one yet.

I found those eggs! I'm so excited that at least one of them is a hen. I've found the lighter one in the nest and haven't heard anything from the darker one, as far as crowing is concerned.

My question is, how do I know if the eggs are any good? It gets up to 110 during the day and the place she picked to lay doesn't have much shade when it hits 12:00 pm. I threw those eggs away because I hadn't noticed them until probably a week after they were laid. I felt very bad throwing them away. I'd like to pick them up during the early morning hours, but I won't be able to get home until 1:00 and every egg that I've picked each day has been really warm. Are they good to eat? Is there a way I can encourage her to lay in a shady spot? They're out in my yard and don't have a coop.

Thanks again!

Ohhhh! Would those eggs look like they would come from the darker chicken?

Hello! I'm still not sure that the second one is a rooster, might be a girl but considering the colour of the eggs you are getting and its green legs maybe those eggs are from the first chicken although the eggs do look different colours or is that just the photo? I would say araucana cross game bird for the second one. To see if your eggs are still ok run some water into a tub and gently place them in, if they float they are bad, if they sink they are fresh!

I didnt know that! Thats some helpful information!

I have heard of the sink/float test in water, but I got rid of them because I wasn't sure how long they were sitting there. The outside heat at 110 won't effect them? When I bring them in, they're super warm.

I also believe all those eggs are from the lighter chicken. I've only seen her in the nest. Yes, all those eggs are the same light brown/creme color, it's just the shadow that makes it look different.

Do you think that if the darker one is a hen, the eggs would be a different color? I wonder why she isn't laying yet?

It's a girl! Well, both are lady hens. I can tell from the previous photo I posted that the eggs do look different. I guess I really wasn't thinking the darker one was a hen. Whichever one is laying the lighter egg is pecking at it sometimes.

I posted this on another thread but figured I'd ask here too. They're laying in an area where the sun starts to hit after mid morning. I can't collect the eggs until after 1:00 and it's summer here in the desert with a high of 110 on hot days. Are the eggs still safe to eat? They're very warm when I collect them and sometimes I can't get to them until later that evening. I have about half a dozen in my fridge and I'm sketchy about eating them. I hate throwing things away. Maybe I can throw them at the neighbors whose dog barks all night?
