The life and times of my backyard flock
5 FEB 2010 .. The chicks have hatched ..
(CHICKS IMAGE)----------------------------
From the dozen farmyard mix eggs we got off ebay, 6 of them hatched, 4 of them were Roosters 2 of them Hens, Because of that ratio 3 of the Roos had to be...
Thanks
I am trying to get some eggs .. But im looking into "show" standard parents, (My hen is from the middleton blood line) I was just curious as to if a black cockerel would mess up the gold laced line to be honest
Ive checked that page out and i think i will have to wait till the kids are...
What would the colour of the offspring most likely be?
Due to the fact my gold laced orpington cockerel died Im thinking of getting another to replace him, At the minute though I can only get Black, Blue and splash colours,
I want to try and keep the gold laced colour off my hen ..would the...
I dont know how this could be explained but im hoping some of you might be able to shed some light on the situation, to maybe help the others if its anything serious,
On saturday i bought 2 7 weeks olds, Both seemed fine and healthy since i got them. Yes one was a little less feathered than...
1st update .. My orpington cockerel died this morning, Havent got a clue why or how - I am devastated
Looks like ill have to concentrate on the hen and find her a new boy to play with ..
Yeah they sure are .. You should see him with my sablepoots - He cant leave them alone.
I think its the camera and the chickens that make the good shots, I just point and click many times (it takes a lot of shots to get a good one as you probably know )

No problem, and thanks for the welcome even though it is 300+ posts into my forum career .. Ill be sure to keep you updated on these 2, I hoping that the cockerel at the back will be a good bird and father a few chicks when he finally gets to run with my 2 buffs i have too.

My chicks are hatched but i dont have a brooder .. so i have to wait at least 6 weeks untill i bring them to the others i have, That could be one of the reasons i bought the 7 week olds to fill the gap, That or they are just too nice and i needed them
Started with 3 hens for eggs and got rid of those due to time issues, When i decided that i wanted more a year later I bought 6 eggs off ebay and hatched 3 hens out of those that i kept to replace the others. I gained another 2 from a friend who said they needed a home or they were going to...
If you really want a broody hen . your more than likely not going to have one, Trust me!!
My brother has OEG and they seem to be fantastic broodys and mothers .. I on the other hand have orpingtons, wyandotte and bantam sablepoots and cant get them to sit longer than an hour
I get 50 kilos of food which usually last me around 2-3 months of "normal" twice a day feeding, I used to have food out all the time but chickens are VERY greedy and will eat for the sake of eating,
Twice a day and roaming around eating what they like is plenty imo
My new 7 week olds water container is a pain in the ass to keep clean so i decided to hang it today .. Hopefully it will save me cleaning the darn thing 20+times a day
I planted some peas today and within 20 seconds of planting the first shoot it was uprooted ... it took a bit of effort to get 12 plants in and cover it with a chicken in the mix
I too am planting pumpkins and other veg this year and was hoping that they would control the bugs, Guess this idea...
