Just saw the vid on your site of the turkey and Gigi's hair style. That made me laugh so hard - my turkeys take exception to the silliest things as well!
Straight comb crossed with the Dv/Dc get you a leaf comb, generally. Overall, Dv is Polish and Crevecour. Dc is Buttercup. Houdan has Dc/Dv so that it splits (Dv) and isn't complete like the Dc - Dv is dominant to Dc. It's late (for me) - hopefully this makes sense...
Ahhh - I understand. The "hybrid/mutt" post was in reference to posts about creating something OTHER than a Rhodebar - autosexing, though - on what *thought* was a thread about a pure breed.
Two separate posts - not intended to be connected. I can see why there would be hostility...
I never said we shouldn't. Did someone else?
All I have been saying is that you can't cross a Rhodebar x RIR cross back to a Rhodebar and then call it a purebred Rhodebar. Simple genetics - and really obvious when you see the difference in chick colors at hatch.
How is this being...
I've grab them by the back of their comb and push their heads (beaks) into the ground until they submit. That's more along the lines of how they communicate. Putting them on their backs is more of a dog thing that birds don't understand. It sometimes works because they are just scared, but I...
What, precisely, gives you the impression that I am "uninformed"? If you believe that a chick from breeding anything back to just *one* of the breeds it originally came from is a purebred, then you are the one woefully uninformed.
I never called ANYONE a hybrid mutt - just the birds. Either...
James, I, too, admire Greenfire for the work they have done. Which is why I really cannot believe that they are intentionally producing green-egg-layers and calling them Rhodebars.
When you say "their Rhodebars are almost all" - do you mean the ones you have? Or are you referring to others...
???
You highlighted things I wrote and said "so much wrong" - you still haven't explained. Did I say it was not possible to recreate the breed? No.
Why are you being mean?
...breeding. There is zero argument that outcrossing produces sexable chicks. If that's what you want, go for it. If your desire is to preserve a *breed* as a whole, then you need to be more careful.
As my desire is for the conservation of the breed, many of the posts I have seen give the...
At the risk of coming off really cranky (just replied to Jeremy), I really do want to understand why folks are posting *here* about hybrid mutts.
Please don't misunderstand - I'm as much a Dr. Frankenstein as the rest and have my own little projects all the time; however, this is the RHODEBAR...
Jeremy, yes - they are autosexing, I said as much - that isn't the point, is it? They aren't "pure" Rhodebar - but you wouldn't be able to tell, would you? That's what frustrates me - people getting a bird, outcrossing it, and selling the F1's as purebred. The autosexing feature is just a...
...and it would be easy to recreate them. Sigh.
People, just about everything started as a cross, certainly. BUT... The Rhodebars were developed *from* Brussbars, Rhode Islands, etc - they are a PURE BREED that took many years to get where they are. Even the assumption that crossing a...
"technically" she says... Ha! With as much Polish interbreeding that has been done with the breed, these are nearly as pure as you can expect in most places.
Many chicks of different breeds and varieties available to pick up in Stockton/Calaveras area or delivery between Sacramento and SF Bay Area.
