What did you do in the garden today?

As an update: the hens have threatened to unionize as they claim our supervisors are driving them too hard.

What did you do in the garden today?

This was my first real year trying tomatoes. It wasn’t bad. I am in Canada and the season is short. I have a lot of green tomatoes that I picked today as frost is likely coming. Any hints on how to ripen them? I have 4 plants that I have hanging in my garage.

What did you do in the garden today?

Here are some close ups of the earth movers. They are currently digging through and loosening up a large compost pile. I just show up in a couple of days with my shovel and spread in on my garden boxes. It’s like shovelling potting soil.

    Double Yolks

Thank you for asking. I sold some half incubated eggs, if you can believe it. Some of those hatched under a crazy broody silkie. I did not have a good hatch. None of the double yolks hatched. Could be the incubator. I will properly calibrate it before I do another hatch. After reading...

    Chicken coop lights

I use a string of led Christmas lights in the rafters just above where they roost. They are on a timer that goes on when the light gets low and stays on for a set period of time. I set it for 3 or 4 hours during the winter depending on the length of daylight. This set up works well.

Hen pecks another hen while mating

I have seen a rooster charge another rooster while that rooster was mating to knock the rooster off. It seems quite common when the mating rooster is not the top rooster. It is actually quite funny. I saw a hen peck at another hen’s head twice while a rooster was on top of that hen. It...

Those look secure. You might need some additional ventilation. As well, once you are close to being done, do a walk-around and see if there are any security weaknesses. If you were a predator, how would you try to get in? There is probably some articles on BYC on securing your coop and run...

Don’t feel bad. We all try our best and sometimes things do not go perfectly.

    Carrying a Chicken

I looked a couple of threads on carrying a chicken and did not see the same way that I do it. I point the chicken forward and put my hand under the outside wing so that my fingers extend across and over the keel with my thumb, straight, near where the wing attaches to the chickens body...

    Double Yolks

I candled 3 of them. One might have had 2 chicks developing. The others looked normal.

    Double Yolks

I am going to leave them in the incubator. I will candle in a couple of days and post some pictures if I can get some good photos.

    Double Yolks

The same hen is laying the double yolks. All my hens are less than 7 months old so their eggs are still a bit small. I do have 1 hen that is 16 months old so I really did not think much of the size other that to think they were fairly large.
